One of the fastest rising star from Melbourne, Australia – Luke Chable, is not just another progressive house and breaks producer. With all the projects that he’s involved with, Luke has developed his talents beyond producing and DJ-ing. At the age of just 25, let’s find out his music achievements.

L: Luke Chable
A:  Alyson for HKClubbing.com

A:  Welcome back to Hong Kong! How are you doing?

L:  Thank you. I’m doing very good.

A: Is this your first time here?

L: Yes, first time that I’ve actually stepped out of the terminal.

A: How d’ya find it?

L: It reminds me of so many other Asian cities. Like, it reminds me of Tokyo, sort of, and a little bit of Taipei, but like the mix of two together.

A: Will you get to look around?

L: I don’t know, I’ve got to get back home, like straight away, coz I’ve got so much work to do. I guess in the car, I’ll get to look around. Maybe go shopping soon, think so…

A: That’s good, everyone has to spend something here. How’s the trip been for you for Heineken so far?

L: Good, yeah, it’s been fun.

A: Traveling around the globe, and being a part of the best music talent in the Heineken team, how’s that like for you?

L: Busy! It’s a different experience.

A: Especially for playing at events with a theme!

L: Exactly. I was visiting the Melbourne Heineken event, which was really interesting. It was like no one really knew it was on, but everyone sort of turned up. Pete Tong was there, and Tiesto was playing, which was really good. But yeah, great event, so I’m really interested to see what happens tonight.

A: I know that you’ve been involved with many many different projects, like Quest, Digital Mind Control, Lo-Step, Dark Alley… You must be that kind of person who knows everyone!

L: I use to not know everyone, I just know a lot of people in Melbourne. Is that Seth, from Australia? No, they’re all Melbourne guys that I know, all friends of mine. I mean I’ve also worked with people from overseas as well, like James Holden, Gwill Morris… there’s a few others, there’s quite a lot of people that I’ve worked with. I know a lot of people, but still, I wanna meet Ferry again, I met him first 3 years ago.

A: Do you find it harder to work with people, like do you prefer to do your own thing?

L: Oh, it depends, it depends. Sometimes with some people, I find it really hard to work with, because I wanna go in one direction with the music, and I wanna go in another direction… Or no, it can be this certain product in the end, but now he sort of wanna do this. But there are other people I’ve worked with, like Phil K with Lo-Step, we just keep going, we work exactly the same way, and it’s really really fun.

A: Phil K was actually here in Hong Kong not too long ago! He’s like a God in here.

L: Yeah I know he was here, but he’s just Phil to me!

A: With the whole Thirst events happening, being able to team up with some many top DJs in the world, and yourself as well. How are they affecting your own sound?

L: My own sound sort of comes from, funny enough, it seems from guys like Ferry, who basically a few years ago nailed a sound that struck a chord with everyone, but like there’s emotion in the music. When there’s emotion in the music, it suddenly gets me going, there’s something that makes me wanna do some more like that. Guys like Timo Mass, his grooves are really tough, and they really make you move, so I love that, and that sort of grows on me as well. So I always put in my music, the emotion, the melody and stuff like that, and the tough grooves and also the beat basslines that you can’t miss. So that’s what it does.

A: So let’s say, when you’re not performing, what kind of music do you listen to? Or do you listen to your own stuff?

L: I listen to my own stuff, but I also listen to a whole wide range of stuff, what I mean wide range, it’s really almost everything, with a reason. Like I used to listen to classical a bit, and sometimes my Dad will show me some jazz, or whatever or some blues, and then there’s some deep sort of house stuff. And then there’s everything. But when I listen to my own stuff, it’s just because I’ve just finished the record and I sort of study it, I’ll keep listening to it to see if it could be better in this way or that way, or just listen to it for what it is, which is fun too.

A: Have your family been supportive enough?

L: Oh yeah, totally. Yeah, I basically gave up university to follow my music career ,and work and everything else, I stopped it there just to do music full-time. And it was hard to get off the ground, but once I got going, now it rather supports itself.

A: I know you’ve already got some really important awards listed on your resume, like ‘Best Remixer’ at the DMA… any other goals that you’re working on at the moment?

L: It’s funny that you asked that, I just had a conversation with Andy Page, just a couple of weeks ago was my birthday, and I just turned 25, and we’re all just talking about goals and stuff, he said, “So do you think you’ve reached any goals? Or what goals have you got now?” And I said, “I don’t know, I’m actually sort of in the limbo, I don’t have any goals at the moment.” I’m trying to figure it out exactly where I want to go, what I want to do, and all of that stuff. Because I’ve got into a point, with my music, that I’ve never thought I could get to, but I always wanted to get to, but I always thought at the back of my mind, “Yeah, I can do that!” But now that I’m here, it’s like, “God where do I go?” And suddenly it’s like the Wizard of Oz, you suddenly get to the land of Oz, or like you get there, and you’re like, “Alright, what do I do now? In Disneyland… which ride do I go on”  I don’t really have any goals at the moment, sort of stopped.

A: So what do you see yourself doing in 5 years?

L: By that time I wanna be making enough money actually start experimenting in music, in lots of different ways, like going off in weird directions, and not concentrating on this sort of dance music area, but I might be, still. But I wanna be able to just sit back and not have to worry about making money to live and all that, I just wanna sit back and experimenting stuff. Probably even 10 years down the track, I’ll hopefully be doing rock bands, coz I grew up with all that stuff.

A: Looking forward to hear your rock songs then! But let’s be honest, any personal goals? Like buy a palace to live in? Marry a supermodel?

L: Well you know they’re everyone’s goal, aren’t they? Nah, everyone wants a house, you want a house, you want a big nice house, you wanna just be able to relax, and to be happy. That’s a goal, be happy all the time!

A: As we see clocks ticking, it’s about we let you move on with your busy schedule. So finally, your plans for the rest of 2004?

L: For the rest of the year, I have to finish an album with Phil K, the live set album, for Global Underground music, I’ve got to finish my contract to Zero Tolerance Recordings, put out a couple of records for them, another couple of records for Vapour, and then there’s a tour for a compilation I’ve been working on, that’s nearly handed in, and hopefully next week we’ll hand it in, and then I’ve got to do a whole tour after that around the world. Otherwise, just finish the live set album and get to work on my own album.

A: Good luck with all your plans, and looking forward to your set tonight!
