 UK electro-rock duo Coburn chatted to Skrufff this week about their blowing up new single We Interrupt This Programme and revealed that their unexpected celebrity status has been causing them one or two problems.
“Christ - this year we were asked to DJ at Paris Hilton's Perfume launch party,” Pete Martin told Skrufff, “Note to self - never accept invite to party hosted by a vacuous, spoilt, bimbette-heiress who cites Barbie as ‘her inspiration’. What were we thinking?” he laughed.
He showed no qualms, however, over licensing the track to a Citroen TV advertising campaign, admitting ‘There were some ethical issues which we got over pretty quickly, though we would draw the line at McDonalds, suppliers of real fur, the Vatican and George Bush's retirement party.”
Meanwhile, Pete’s Coburn partner in crime, former Psy-trance star Tim Healey revealed he’s recently been selling off his old trance records on e-bay despite finding himself performing at more and more festivals.
“Over the last year or so I have been booked to play at several trance events in Brazil and Japan – in Brazil in particular I haven't played to less than 12000 people at one of these events,” said Tim, “But don't panic. I don't play any trance and the BPMs stay below 130. I play on the main stage, at the end of the event and it tends to go off.”
Pete was similarly upbeat about the general health of club culture, declaring ‘musically we’re living in enlightened times’.
“We’ve been championing the rock meets dance cause for fucking ages, but it is only in the last couple of years that the rest of the world has got into it. Tim has been running his Rock Da World night at Turnmills for a couple of years now, pushing the sound that incorporates electro-house, beats, breaks, a healthy dose of indie-rock and the anarchic.
Though it’s difficult to tell whether this is a result of broadened horizons, with bands like Soulwax, 2 many DJs and LCD Soundsystem coming to the fore or boredom with the dance-industry status quo that has brought this moment about,” he added.
