HKClubbing caught up with Dexter before he came to Hong Kong and performed at Club Ing on the 19th March 2005.
1. What have you been up to lately, especially now that you’re no longer with The Avalanches? Since I left, I've been touring extensively for the past few years. This will be my first time playing in Hong Kong so bring it on...
2. What can we expect from your HK show? Good times, classics presented in an original way, the whole set makes sense as a piece of music.
3. Kid Koala played in HK in July last year. You’ve played with him, right -- what do you think of him and how does he compare/not to you? He is brilliant. He's one of a few who can keep a dance floor going while scratching great melodies and rhythms. I think our only similarity is that we can keep a dance floor happening.
4. What will your upcoming solo album sound like? A party with good friends...
5. Where/how do you get your music and sound samples from? I’m not sampling at all these days! I’ve been making music seriously for 2 months now, concentrating more on instrumentations and working with great musicians.
6. You’ve done projects for The Chemical Brothers and Beastie Boys. What did you do to deliver a “Dexter’ed” result? Not being afraid to take the original and completely fuck it up. Even if it’s in a bad way...
7. HK’s DJ Tommy also was a World DMC Runner-up, back in 1996. You won that title in 2000. Does the DMC worldwide brotherhood connection follow you for the rest of your life? Sure, its quite special looking back and realising we are all a part of DJ history.
8. You’re Filipino, right? When you think of legends like you, Tommy, Kid Koala and Q-Bert, do you think Asians have secret turntablist skills? It’s no secret…
9. Your musical style is truly original. Name 3 things that inspire you the most... Undiscovered music, films, underdogs
10. Name 3 things you can't wait to do in HK... Eat, drink n dance, up for the crazy shit!
