Is Jonty Skrufff your real name?
Jonty Skrufff: “No, but with the tragically dysfunctional family background I endured I much prefer this one. Longer term HKClubbing readers might remember my old name but I no longer use it. Skrufff is the name of my business partner’s Staffordshire Bull Terrier, the fiercest though cutest pup in Britain. Her face is our logo, her name seems appropriate.
What inspired you to become a DJ?
Jonty Skrufff: “I've got to thanks superstar US jock Roger Sanchez for igniting the spark, with an imperial performance backstage at the Exit festival in Serbia last year. Apparently in need of some pre-gig relaxation, Roger got his people to eject all the hangers-on from the bar area and as I was manhandled out of the VIP area the thought occurred to me that I might just be in the wrong game (journalism). Seven days later, I found myself hanging in Judge Jules' DJ booth in Ibiza being increasingly distracted by a statuesque, very friendly Spanish model type in his entourage (the girlfriend of Jules’ minder), and that was it.”
Really?
Jonty Skrufff: “Kind of. Though to be honest, in a weird twist of fate, Mark Moore (S Express), Alex Silverfish and the Golf Sale promoters all suddenly offered me DJ slots completely out of the blue 3 weeks after that Ibiza trip and after years of messing about at home I suddenly decided to give it a proper shot. I thought it might be fun. As it turned out, all three gigs went like a dream, I got more bookings and I was hooked.”
And now you always seem to be DJing in Brazil?
Jonty Skruff: I love Brazil, adore the food, the people, the climate and perhaps inevitably, the girls. My style of music went down great the first time I visited. The net means Brazil’s alternative, electro, fashion crowd are totally up to speed with what’s happening in cities like London and New York and I forged great connections with some seriously lovely people there, straightaway. I’m now doing two three times a year residencies in Sao Paulo and Rio, visiting every four months or so. I’m next back there in December.”
You seem to DJ at a lot of gay clubs?
Jonty Skrufff: “I’m a bit of a male fag hag, many of friends are gay and I must admit I often find the best clubs with the most interesting people and music are gay clubs. Gay culture, or rather alternative gay culture is always at the cutting edge and London’s scene right now is very interesting. It feels like there’s a genuine underground thing going on. My favourite clubs have always been mixed gay/ straight clubs where people’s sexuality is secondary to who they are rather than their dominant characteristic. People in mixed clubs tend to more open-minded- gays and straights and you also find far more beautiful, unusual girls in them.”
Do you pull more now you’re a DJ?
Jonty Skrufff:: Hmmmm, since I’ve taken up DJing I’ve started working even harder than ever so the short answer is no- though I’m happily single, and if I’m being totally honest I’ll say, maybe just a little’.
What music do you listen to at home?
Jonty Skrufff:: “Mainly electro-disco stuff of the kind I spin though I’m also partial to everything from Talk Talk to the Clash to Pink Floyd, Jeff Buckley and Jean Michel Jarre.”
Do you dance?
“With loads more enthusiasm than skill but yes, whenever I go out. Dancing’s what makes clubbing fun.”
Jonty Skruff will be spinning quality Electro on the 10th October (Thursday) at Volar, Lan Kwai Fong! |
