French electro-tech producer Scan X (aka Stephane Dri) chatted to Skrufff this week about his soon to be finished third artist album and upcoming tour with the Youngsters and revealed that he’s unimpressed with the hype that’s recently surrounded minimal electronic music.
“Some people are always looking for something that can be fashionable, and maybe the minimal sound is following the same path that filtered house/disco did a few years ago,” Stephane suggested, “with too many records and too many DJs playing it so in the end it becomes really boring and people get tired of it.”
“For me, most of the really interesting tracks coming out are those mixing elements that could never have been combined ten years ago, when there was a wall between electronic music and other genres; electroclash thing is a good example of that mixing,” he continued.
“Multi-influenced music is the only thing that can save electronic music. And what I mean by that is not to be stuck in one genre, there needs to be a good balance between music that’s created for dancing to and listening to at the same time.”
The acclaimed producer works closely with Laurent Garnier (engineering many of the F Com chief’s records) and remains most closely associated with techno, though told Skrufff he longer identifies with the term as it’s nowadays used.
“If techno is an attitude them I recognise myself in the term, but not if it it’s just a musical style,” said Stephane.
“When I discovered what was techno music 15 years ago, I was interested in it because it was about bringing something different and if you look at the originators back then they never said ‘I’m doing techno’. They were just making music in a new way with electronics instruments, and techno was born.”
“So now I'm working on my third album and I'm not thinking in terms of style, there will be all my influences included though the key is always not do what I’m used to, finding a good balance between techno, electro, minimal and other influences,” he concluded.
“But at the end of the day I don't really care what it’s called as long as it’s music about energy and emotion; whatever it is.”
