1. How did you meet each other and what made you start working together as producers? Graham was writing stuff before I even touched a pc and passed a cd to a mutual friend as I was already established as a dj in the main city near where we both come from. We got a general feeling that I might have been able to help him out with the sound of his tracks and inject some ideas and it all kinda went from there. 2. What is the first Drum n' Bass single that you bought? Thats a real difficult question because we were both into the music years back when it was classed as 'acid house' then 'rave' then 'jungle' (and its now known as 'drum & bass') so I really don't know which the first record was that would have been classed as 'd&b'. First few dance/rave records on vinyl I bought were probably Eon's "basket case", Jonny L's "hurt you so" and Pennywises "Neuromancer - all dating back to 1991/1992. 3. Ant, how was the Tour with Basic Operation that you just completed in America? How did the crowd react compared to the UK/European crowds? It was good, kind of up and down. Some gigs were great, some not so good. I found the scene was healthiest on the west coast - especially L.A as I did 2 dates there at the start and the end of the month long tour and both of the dates were great - Crowds were great, the very last gig I did at Samurai Sunday in LA reminded me of playing at Swerve in London because the crowd really knew their music and proper got down on the dance floor. 4. You have released some tunes on some very big labels previously, and now you have started your own imprint Dispatch Recordings. It seems like a lot of Drum N Bass producers are starting their own labels these days. What made you want to move to your own label and how did you find the transition? 2 simple reasons - Greater control of our musical output and with Dispatch I know we wont get ripped off financially or at least have to wait around ages for labels to pay us. 5. As mentioned previously, you have released tunes and done remixes on some big labels, such as Commercial Suicide, Bingo, Renegade Recordings, Advanced, and Liquid V. Who have you enjoyed working with the most (artists or labels) and why? We've enjoyed doijng stuff for Liquid V and especially for Total Science's Advanced imprint as they have been good and honest with us, can't ask anymore than that really. We go way back with the total science boys as mates anyway so it was good to do stuff for them, both Brian G and Total Science have given us a lot of support with our output. 6. After The "Mixed & Dispatched Vol.1", what's the forthcoming plan on Dispatch Recordings? Ah thanks - a chance to plug! Nice 1. The next release is from Stress level, myself and Chris SU "Waves" / "Free", then Tactile with "Wild things" / "Banton" after that its Atlantic Connection with "Situations" / "Don't love you" then it should be myself, Stress Level & Jenna G with "Lost in music part 2" / "Indigo Run" and I'm just confirming a release from Survival and System with "Caught on m" / "Alpine" - so all in all its looking like the rest of 2006 is sorted release wise and I'm more than happy as I feel the music going out on the label at the moment is better than ever. 7. We understand that you came out to Thailand in September of last year. What was the purpose for coming out to Asia for the first time and what was your impression? I played at a nightclub called Astra for Vertigo so I was booked for the date but decided to experience an extra 4 days over there - I realised this definately wasn't enough as I completely fell in love with the place. Complete different culture to england and the food was superb (and not too pricey), along with cheap booze and very nice looking women every where you turn - what more can you ask? Plus not forgetting that even in monsoon season I know I'd have got far more soaked back home in ht dreary english winter! 8. If you could name a movie which represents the Drum n' Bass sound you produce, what would be the movie? Boogie Nights! 9. Do you have any images in your mind when you produce a track? Or has their been a track that was inspired by specific imagery? Dunno about G (Stress Level) but its hard to think of any images when suffering from a severe hang over! We tend to have an idea of how we want it to sound rather than just going in and seeing what happens (which is what we used to do), we'll get some sounds together in a folder best we can and go from there, thats generally how it kicks off. 10. Is there anything about Chinese culture that you have seen, but would like to learn more about while you are in Hong Kong? Shaolin / King Fu history which is some thing I find very fascinating. Would definately like to learn more in the spare time I have. I'm stacked up with all Bruce Lee's films and hes been my hero since a kid so I'm pretty chuffed to actually visit Hong Kong! Profile
TC1 & Stress Level have been producing Drum N Bass for roughly 4 years and releasing music on such labels as Advanced, Commercial Suicide, Bingo, Liquid V, and Renegade Recordings. They have both been interested in dance music from the early rave days of 92 and 93 in the UK. Stress Level started playing with beats and samples back in University, while TC1 began to DJ at the age of 16, starting off on pirate radio and then progressing into clubs. They were inspired in the early jungle days by artists such as Omni Trio, Roni Size, Die, Krust, Doc Scott, and Hidden Agenda. Today, their musical inspiration comes from many places and ordinary situations. Their tracks to date have received strong support with Fabio airing 9 of their tracks to date on his Radio 1 show. Grooverider has recently aired their remix of Satisfy on his Radio 1 show as well. Their tracks have also received support from the likes of Bailey, Flight, Friction, Dbridge & L-Double (all on BBC 1xtra) and club play on dub from the likes of - Goldie, Klute, Zinc, Calibre, Hidden Agenda, Artificial Intelligence, A-sides, Simon Bassline, Total science, High Contrast, LTJ Bukem, Brian G, Dj Lee and Storm to name a good few. TC1 is still running the general management side of ‘Dispatch Recordings’. Releases lined up for 2006 include material from Stress Level & TC1, Commix, XRS & Motive. TC1 also released a MIX CD with MC Lowqui in the spring of this year.
