ImageQ1 How did you first get into music and what were your first steps on your musical journey? What are your roots musically?

Throughout my teenage years I was really into metal and punk. I started playing drums in a punk/metal band when I was 17 and then later played in a ska/punk band for about 5 years.

We recorded a few demos and played a lot of gigs in Perth but it was really just for fun. I guess you could say my roots are in band music, but once I discovered drum and bass around 1998 that all took a back seat and I concentrated solely on drum and bass from that point onwards.

2. Pendulum has come up very quickly in the world wide scene of Drum and Bass. What has been one of the high points of this journey?

Probably getting to remix The Prodigy and do a support slot at one of their shows. They're a huge inspiration musically and are a group we've always looked up to.

3. How do you feel about your Asia tour and coming to Hong Kong?

I was in Hong Kong on honeymoon a short time ago, its going to be great to come back and play there. I totally love Asia and wish I could spend a lot more time there, this tour will be short but anytime I've played there I have had an awesome time and met some great people.

4. Your production really has helped raise the bar as far as Drum and Bass is concerned. What simple advice can you give to other producers out there?

Put in the effort. Don't just use lazy samples everyone else has used, especially when it comes to vocals and instruments. With a little effort into pre-production you can have a unique sound and you can be very original. If you know someone who sings, record them. Use your friends! If they play guitar, record them. Basically do anything you can to set yourself apart from everyone else.

5. What unreleased dub plates are you dropping right now and what producers are you most feeling?

2007 is already shaping up to be a great year musically, there is so much brand new stuff out there that’s completely tearing down the clubs. The new Matrix and Futurebound collaborations, new Rufige Crew, new Noisia, Subfocus, Sigma, TC etc. So many guys are killing it at the moment.

7. Outside of drum and bass what other music are you into?

Electronically I'm really feeling electro house at the moment (it seems everyone else is too!) and find Trentemollers music a huge inspiration. Outside of electronic music I have extremely wide tastes ranging from Slayer to Cursive to Muse.

8. With the launch of the Pendulum live band it seems that you guys are taking a different direction. Can we expect a more "live" sound in Pendulum tunes now? Is it still going to be drum and bass?

Our sound from now on may well be more 'live'. There’s always going to be Pendulum drum and bass.

9. It seems that a logical step for most successful dnb producers nowadays is to set up their own label. Does Pendulum ever plan to do that?

Probably not! I think a lot of producers do that so they feel they can have complete control over their affairs. The other option is to involve yourself with a label you have trust in, and that’s what we will be doing shortly.

10 What plans do you have for the next album and the future?

Hopefully the next album will be finished soon and we can tour it in both a DJ and Live capacity. I guess we will have to wait and see how that works out before planning anything else.    11 Sum up your career in three words    Amazing, Stressful and Scary.
