DJ Celcius, the newest member of Jakarta’s Javabass drum n bass collective, plays Linq on Pottinger Street on Saturday, May 10th. He tells Joe Marsh about his influences and why he wants to see Paris Hilton at his afterparty…
Why the name Celcius? I don’t know, I just came up with it when I woke up one morning and I thought the name was cool. Who are you biggest current influences, and who were your initial influences when you first got into music? My biggest DnB influence right now is the Hospital Crew – I love their music. From outside DnB, I like some nu jazz bands, such as All Good Funk Alliance, Koop, etc. My first influences came from my friend Jerome – he’s the one that introduced me to DnB and it’s kinda changed my life. What and where was the best gig you’ve ever played? The best gig I ever played was my first one, in 2003, called Destination One. It was a rave in a building that used to be an illegal gambling spot. The room where I played was kinda small – really small actually – but the room was packed and the vibe was awesome. What are you into apart from DJing? I started producing and I got into DJing after that Do you have any other job apart from DJing? Is that what you’d be doing if you weren’t DJing? Yup, I do some jingles for commercial TV and I’m also an audio engineer for commercial TV too. Yes! Because that’s where the money comes from! Have you played Hong Kong before? No, this is my first time in Hong Kong, I’ve never been before. Who would you most like to invite to your gig afterparty - and why? My closest friends – cos they’re my friends. Hugh Hefner – cos I want him to bring all his girls. And Paris Hilton – cos I want to see her in real life, not through a night-vision camera… :P http://www.javabass.com/ http://www.myspace.com/celciusdj
