Local Drum n Bass DJ Arkham this week chatted to HKClubbing about his current work on remixing Michael Jackson, his regular monthly gig at the well known Yumla bar in central, as well as his love for the beer known as Kronenberg.
(If you are a local DJ in Hong Kong please do get in touch so that people kind find our more about you too!)
Q1: Could you give us a brief self-introduction? – DJ Arkham - mixing D&B since the early 90s – love Kronenberg!
Q2: What kind of music do you play? – Drum and Bass
Q3: Who’s your biggest musical influence? – Too many to mention, but hip-hop and electronic music is most prevalent on my ipod – decent music of any sort really – at the moment I am really digging ‘Artic Monkeys’ and ‘Cadence Weapon’.
Q4: What makes you wanna DJ? And how did you start your career? – First things first, I enjoy the music – I was fortunate enough to be DJing at a time when D&B was relatively new and there were not thousands of DJs playing it out – any gigs that came up I was first in line to play.
Q5: Favorite track of the year? – Well my top three Drum and Bass tracks (not really fair to have just one): Juno by Subfocus, Slam by Pendulum and anything by Logistics.
Q6: Best thing about playing a live set? – Knowing that you are entertaining people.
Q7: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? – I’m not a ‘professional’ DJ but I will still be playing a producing tunes.
Q8: When can we expect (a new album / an album) from you? – When I get enough time to finish what I’ve started… probably 2048 at this rate.
Q9: Tell us about the latest project you’re working on… I’ve been doing a bit of work on a hip-hop/D&B track with a friend of mine - Rigby. He came up with the idea to remix Wacko Jackco’s ‘Beat it’. Sounds pretty fresh, so should be completed in the New Year.
Q10: Where are you currently performing? – You can hear me and my partner DJ Fat Demon (a.k.a. DJ Jonathan) on the first Friday of every month down at Yumla. If you have not experienced it, get down there about 11:00pm and ensure you’re wearing your dancing shoes.
Q11: Is this a full time job or do you also have a job during the day and if yes, what is it? – I am not a full time DJ – my day job: very big company (‘nuff said)
Q12: Final words for fans in Hong Kong? – Come down to Yumla as well as looking out for other D&B nights around HK (Nu Tone is playing in LKF on the 16th December – will be good).
Q13: If there was a DJ that you could spin with on the same night who would it be? – I’ve played with most of the internationals – I respect Andy C’s skills an enormous amount, so I guess him – Adam F is an amazing producer, frankly there are so many high quality people in the scene that I am honored to play with any of them.
