Elaine Shin, or as most Hong Kong clubbers know her as DJ Tynee, is one of the resident DJ’s spinning at Volar on most Wednesday’s and Friday’s.
I had the chance to sit down with her and talk about her music career. Chaand: Hi Elaine, and thank you for taking the time to sit down and exclusively interview with me. I’m curious as to your background. Where were you born, and where did you grow up?
Elaine: I was born in Hong Kong but I grew up in New York. C: How long ago did you move to Hong Kong? E: Around 10 years now C: It’s interesting to hear stories of how DJ’s wedged themselves into this career path. How did you get into DJ-ing? E: I have always loved music all my life….but instead of being the one on the dance-floor, I wanted to be the one serving the tunes. Actually there was a funny story to how it all started. I promised to introduce my friend to this girl if he lent me his decks in exchange. And he kept his promise after I introduced them and they started dating. The decks arrived at my place like a day or two after they finally met. C: How long have you been a DJ for? E: Not so long actually. Less than 1 and 1/2 years. C: Do you think that Hong Kong is a more creative environment to work in compared to some of the other places you have been to, and if not, why. If so, how? E: Definitely. Otherwise, I would not be able to play out so quickly after I just starting to DJ. So far I have been able to be creative in most clubs and play whatever I think will be a nice flow of music for the crowd. In the past 6 months, the types of music I play have really evolved a lot. I am really loving the wider spectrum of styles I integrate into a set. Not just break-beat or just proper house anymore; it’s a more subtle merge of genres I guess. C: What is your opinion of the Hong Kong party scene? E: I wish I could say it rocked but I can’t. C: What has been your best gig so far do you think? E: I have good gigs every week; I love every moment that I play. C: What have you enjoyed most about being a DJ? E: To be able to share the music with the people. C: Do you regard DJ-ing as a form of art? E: Most definitely. C: Lets say you had the chance to work with someone famous. Who would you like to collaborate with musically? E: There are way too many producers out there I respect. Out of the many, perhaps Benz and MD or Habersham. C: You seem quite busy with your career, how do you relax? E: I actually workout at the gym, do yoga, go to spas, read Harry Potter and get massages C: Are there any events happening soon that you would like to inform people about? E: I will be in China most weekends this September. In places like Shanghai, Guongzhou and a bunch of other cities. But during the week, I will be at Volar and at lost. C: Well thank you very much Elaine for sitting down with me today, it has been a great pleasure!
