Q1: Could you give us a brief self-introduction? I’m obsessed with Drum’n’Bass…. new, old, whatever… it’s all good! Started spinning in Sydney, Australia back in 2000. Moved here 3 months ago and found the MagneticSoul Crew. They’ve been fantastic, getting me to play where they can. Now helping these guys out with parties etc… spinning where I can really.
Q2: What kind of music do you play? Drum ‘n’ Bass. From Liquid Funk, Rollers, Tech to Jump up, all rolled into in set, whatever pleases the ear really.
Q3: Who’s your biggest musical influence? Musically (non-Drum‘n’Bass) Anything Jazzy, anything that has good piano riff in it really… love that sort of stuff. Drum‘n’Bass wise… There are many… DJs include Friction and Zinc. And Producer, Calibre is a big one, Break, DJ Ritual (DJ/Producer from Sydney, amazing production coming from Downunder right now!) and too many to count.
Q4: What makes you wanna DJ? And how did you start your career? I guess it’s just one of the many exact same stories you hear about DJs and how they become one… I saw Krafty Kuts in Melbourne, Australia ages ago and after that, had to get my own decks and just started spinning… Breaks and Hip Hop was big back then, but I’ve moved on now… thank god!
Q5: Favorite track of the year? 2004 – Mr.Majestic – Calibre or True Romance – D Bridge 2005 – Don’t have one yet… too many good tunez out there to pick right now.
Q6: Best thing about playing a live set? Being able to please the crowd with your own selection is fantastic. You’re bringing your own type of “sound” when you’re playing out, and if people happen to dig it, then all good!
Q7: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I would love to say that I’d be playing at “THE END”, playing back to back with DJ Friction in less than five years… but it’s hard work and it’s a long road ahead. But ultimately, I would just want to keep playing records and see where it takes me.
Q8: When can we expect (a new album / an album) from you? You mean a new “Mix”? well… nothing planned, I’m always doing mixes, but that’s for my own satisfaction. On that note though, I host a net radio show for www.planetdnb.com, PlanetDnB Live from Hong Kong, every Wednesday night 7pm-8:30pm. So come check it out!
Q9: Tell us about the latest project you’re working on. Not really working on anything really… still just playing with beats on my computer and TRYING to finish a track which I’ve been playing with the last 3 months now… too many ideas and too little time… or motivation.
Q10: Where are you currently performing? Going to be playing for “New Black” @ Yumla, hosted by Louis69 on the 30th December. Played there a few times now, the last time was well wicked! Banged it out all night non-stop just pure party vib! Also, 14th January 06, MagneticSoul Crew presents DnB-Mag release @ Bling (3/F, Soho Square, 21 Lyndurst Terrace, Centra). Check www.magneticsoul.co.uk for more details. Bunch of DJs from around the globe will be spinning that night plus DJs from the crew like Kay C, Cookie, Fat Demon, come check it out. Mosdef it’s going to be wicked party for sure!
Q11: Is this a full time job or do you also have a job during the day and if yes, what is it? Nope, not a full time DJ. And yes, I do have a full time job, but that’s enough about that.
Q12: Final words for fans in Hong Kong? Big ‘ting for Drum’n’bass in 2006 locally and internationally! All you DnB headz out there, get behind your local promoters! Cuz there’s no parties without you lot! Let keep this Rollin’!
Q13: If there was a DJ that you could spin with on the same night who would it be? DJ Friction, Zinc and maybe Calibre (just to hear his tunez!)
Respect! R.
