HKClubbing has decided instead of always interviewing the big overseas stars each month, Hong Kong also has plenty of its own local stars within the entertainment and music industry that people worldwide should really know about.
This weeks interview we catch up with Jay from Robot (the group and the person who brings you Robot magazine every month or so). As many of us in Hong Kong Jay also runs a production company and regularly DJs down at the well know Yumla.
Q1: Could you give us a brief self-introduction? Bobby Parsley and myself founded ROBOT in Hong Kong nearly 8 years ago – which is now Hong Kong’s longest running electronic music event. Parsley is currently putting his feet up, so I am in charge of cog maintenance. Mike the Unstoppable also lends a hand. Q2: What kind of music do you play? Deep house, techno and electro. Q3: Who’s your biggest musical influence? Numerous; Swayzak, Matthew Herbert, Matthew Dear, Richie Hawtin, John Tejada, Technasia, and me mum and her famous tambourine. Q4: What makes you wanna DJ? And how did you start your career? Actually, I started by organizing parties when I was a student and none of the DJ’s would turn up on time. I felt like a bit of a knob standing in front of a tasty system without any sound, so thought – I better learn to mix – at least enough to cover the early set. Q5: Favorite track of the year? Matthew Dear – Dog Days Q6: Best thing about playing a live set? It’s nice to be playing all your own sounds! There’s a lot more flexibility in terms of controlling the sound. Q7: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Either dead or living in a giant golden egg perched atop the Cheung Kong Centre. Q8: When can we expect (a new album / an album) from you? There’s one in the pipeline – a concept-based project – which will (I hope) reflect the diversity of Hong Kong, on a social/cultural/geographical level – translated into electro, dub and techno. Weather permitting, should be available early next year. Q9: Tell us about the latest project you’re working on. ROBOT magazine - day and night, night and afternoon – relentless, without sleep, eating only dried fruits and berries from the plentiful streets of Sheung Wan. A free magazine for Hong Kong, focusing on urban culture and alternative thought! It’s also available online: www.robotunderground.net Q10: Where are you currently performing? Yumla. Q11: Is this a full time job or do you also have a job during the day and if yes, what is it? Besides ROBOT, I run a production company (www.salondepigeon.com) which specializes in event production, photography, graphic design and video. Q12: Final words for fans in Hong Kong? 1,2,3,4,5 once I caught a fish alive, 6,7,8,9,10 then I let him go again. Q13: If there was a DJ that you could spin with on the same night who would it be? Claude Young or Dave Clarke – though I would be petrified!
