This week we got to talk to Yumla DJ regular Vincent Aze about his wide selection of music influences in his DJ sets, his French roots and his first regular residency which happened to be in Hong Kong.
Aze went the old school way of getting gigs with demo tapes, and now it has paid off with wicked sets found in HK each month.
Q1: Could you give us a brief self-introduction?
28 years old, French, have been leaving in HK for nearly 3 years with my girlfriend Alice. I spend the week working for a software company in business development and enjoy myself playing in clubs during week ends.
Q2: What kind of music do you play?
A wide selection of dance music ranging from house to techno and including electro-house of course as it’s so hot. German, English and French are great at making fine techno and electro-house. As for pure house music, I go for the Chicago fat bass lines. I prefer playing for long hours in order to build up a set using different styles and sounds. I like different types of music so it’s easier to try and adapt myself to people and places; and still enjoy it greatly. Totally addicted to bass.
Q3: Who’s your biggest musical influence?
Oxygen by Jean Michel Jarre seems to have been the first music I fell for as a toddler. There was also the hypnotic Ravel’s Bolero. Later as a teenager I had a long Reggae phase before plunging into the mammoth world of electronic music. Labels like Get Physical, Poker Flat, Kompakt, Playhouse… are definitely top of the chart record labels releasing amazing work.
Q4: What makes you wanna DJ? And how did you start your career?
I get a buzz from playing loud sexy groovy music in a dark space with lots of people enjoying themselves. Dunno why?!? I started old school, by introducing myself to club managers and giving them demo tapes. Yumla is the first place to give me a regular night.
Q5: Favourite track of the year?
That’s a tough question but “Use Fuse” by Frank Martiniq sounds like an answer.
Q6: Best thing about playing a live set?
Partying listening to your favourite tracks.
Q7: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In Hong Kong making music, DJing around the world and promoting events, artists and music. Actually not too sure but it sounds like a cool plan anyway!
Q8: When can we expect the first track from you?
I have been working on it for a while and hope to release soon a track on vinyl in collaboration with Dan F from Disuye Records. Don’t want to rush things out but really look forward to it. Sometimes I play my own tracks recorded on CD and it’s a lot of fun to see people dancing to them.
Q9: Where are you currently performing?
There is a monthly event at Yumla called Planet Vega where I play from midnight until they throw me out at the end of the night! This is a great one as I can play whatever I feel like and people follow the groove until the end. I also play at Volar, in Shanghai, in some of our local rave parties and hopefully at Sugar when they open.
Q10: Final words for fans in Hong Kong?
Check the HKClubbing.com and Yumla.com website schedules for info on the next gigs, come out and dance!
Q11: If there was a DJ that you could spin with on the same night who would it be?
It used to be Jack de Marseille but I invited him to play at my party called Le House this past June. It was wicked to have him here in HK. So now it’s gotta be Hawtin and Villalobos together as a duo. Hawtin has already been here a few years ago; I must find an way to bring him back here again. I saw him last September at Fabric in London do his Decks n’ Efx show and was stunned by his imagination and technique. This guy has been designing the future of electronic music for years now and is still ahead of his time. |
