Interview with DJ H What’s your real name? I’ll give you a clue…it’s a typical Indian name and it begins with H! Describe yourself in five words. Fresh/Funky/Sexy/Creative/And the rest What’s your music style? Everything that makes a dance floor rock. Bollywood, bhangra, R&B, hip hop, house/funky house and anything else that gets people moving and grooving How did you get interested in DJing and when did you start? I had a passion for music from an early age but I started Dj-in when I was fifteen Who and what are your key influences for working in the music industry? One of my key influences has been my family & friends they’ve always pushed me to strive for more and achieve my ever evolving goals. Other than that I am a very ambitious and self-motivated person. There are many people within the music industry that have influenced me, too many to mention. If I started naming names we would be here forever. What was your most memorable gig and why? I think my most memorable would have to have been the first club I played in at the age of 17, it was in Leicester square in London at a club called Equinox, infront on a an audinence of about 2,500 people. It was a great experience and just made me realise that this was what I really wanted to do. I got an amazing buzz that just helped fuel my fire to want to DJ. Ever had any awkward moments while spinning live? YES! - I got ready to do a set infront of a crowd of 2000 people and then realised I had forgotten all my bhangra cd’s and only had bollywood and R&B tracks, which was a problem because I was the main bhangra Dj that night. Thankfully I got a few of my mates to get a few CD’s together from their car collections. Your 5 ultimate dancefloor tunes. : • Ishq brandy (Dj-h) – that’s gotta be my number one for obvious reasons! • Everybody dance now (Bob Sinclair) – this track never fails to get people dancing. • Punjabi mcs • Be faithful (Fatman scoop) • Captain Bhangra What hobbies and interests consume your time off the turntables and out of the studio? Well when I’m not working on my new album (‘Rags To Riches’) or playin at gigs across the world, I like to kick back and relax. Ilove smoking sheesha, going out clubbing, I like to stay fit and healthy so I’m a regular at the gym, I also enjoy swimming. Spending time with friends and my loved ones is also really important to me. I like to jet-set, love traveilling and holidays and I enjoy nights out at the casino. I guess just everything involved with having fun and enjoying life. Have you been to Hong Kong before, and what do you think of the place? Yes, but only ever to the airport which seemed to resemble a bus station? If you haven’t yet, are you looking forward to your upcoming gig? I always look forward to playing in front of a different crowd. It also gives me a chance to see what the other side of the world likes to rave to. Being a niche DJ in the global market, has the appreciation factor played a major role in your career? If you mean the appreciation I get from fans, yes its helped a lot, as there are a lot of ‘bhangra-heads’ out their that are always loyal to the kind of music I play. Because there is such a diverse range of genres of music out there it has been important to know people appreciate my music. That just gives me more of a reason to keep doing what I do because of the great response I get. What appeals to you most about a DJ’s lifestyle? Well I work hard and play hard, but yeh it’s a great lifestyle. I get to wake up when I want, travel the world and take my mates along for the ride. I get great satisfaction knowing that i’m getting to live my dream of being a Dj. One thing you would change about the music industry? I know its been publicised a lot already by other artists, but people downloading music is a problem. Also the majority of people I hear from and meet are always very supportive but there are always those few haters that feel the need to be negative towards me for no reason. Any future plans? Well after my last album (‘The debut’) and the success of my huge smash hit track ‘Ishq brandy’ I realised the direction I wanted to go down in my career and for the past few months I’ve been working 24-7 on my new album ‘Rags To Riches’ which has already been signed with a massive album deal and will be released shortly. DJ H will be performing live on Saturday 28th October at Tru, Lan Kwai Fong.
