Four Tet is the recording, live and DJ identity for Kieran Hebden’s work as an electronic musician.
Kieran born
Kieran formed his first band Fridge with friends Adem Ilhan and Sam Jeffers out of Elliott school in Wandsworth, SW London.
Early trailblazers of what would come to be identified as Post Rock, the instrumental trio released their first record, ‘Ceefax’, for Trevor Jackson’s Output label in March.
A second Fridge album ‘Semaphore’ is released by Output, along with a later collection of 7” and 12”s called ‘Sevens And Twelves’. The first Four Tet single ‘ThirtySixTwentyFive’, which lasts 36 minutes and 25 seconds is released by Output in July. The second Four Tet single, ‘Misnomer’, follows in December.
The first Four Tet album, ‘Dialogue’ is released by Output in May. Its adoption of the principles of free jazz and electronic experimentation immediately sees it acclaimed as a benchmark release. The third Fridge album ‘Eph’ comes out on Go! Beat. Lo Recordings releases a Four Tet/Rothko split 12”, and the Four Tet single ‘Glasshead’ is released on Output.
Kieran spends the spring and summer writing towards an album that, with its blending of pastoral English folk influences and electronics, will come to define a genre, folktronica. Kieran releases the split 12-inch, ‘Four Tet vs Pole’ with the artists each remixing the other’s work. Fridge work on the follow up to ‘Eph’ and also become Badly Drawn Boy’s band for a few months, playing festivals across Europe and touring in Japan.
The first Four Tet album for Domino Records, ‘Pause’ is released in May of the year. In fact, all four Four Tet albums have fallen at precise two-year increments, every other May. The fourth Fridge album, ‘Happiness’, is released on Kieran’s own Text label. One of the stand-out tracks from ‘Pause’, ‘No More Mosquitoes’ is released as a single in June, A remix 12” entitled ‘Paws’ is released in September which features mixes from long-term Kieran associate Manitoba as well as Koushik.
Kieran works on the forthcoming third Four Tet album, as ever at home and with very basic equipment. He also starts to work more on performing the Four Tet music in a live context and becomes interested in the idea of being able to improvise electronic music in real time. That summer he is invited to tour with Radiohead through Spain and Portugal and in the autumn he tours with Super Furry Animals in the US. From then on live performance becomes a key part of the Four Tet creative process.
In the spring Kieran and fellow Fridge member Adem form the band for legendary 60s folk singer Vashti Bunyan’s rare one-off performance at London’s Royal Festival Hall, as part of a Steve Malkmus chosen line-up. The third Four Tet album ‘Rounds’ (Domino) is released in May, while Kieran is on tour with Prefuse 73 and Manitoba through North America. It is preceded by the ‘She Moves She’ 12” in March, and followed by ‘As Serious As Your Life’, which includes an exclusive 12” of remixes from Detroit underground hip-hop legend Jay Dee, as well as an amazing 23-minute live version of the track from Kieran’s increasingly wild shows. ‘Rounds’ is the most successful Four Tet album to date, garnering across the board praise for its bold innovation and intense musicality. In October Kieran undertakes his biggest ever UK tour with the Animal Collective in support and goes back to the US to do more shows with Prefuse 73.
Kieran tours Europe with Stereolab. Later in the spring, the highly innovative videos made for tracks from ‘Rounds’ (including Woof Wan Bau’s award winning animation, as well as ‘Pause’’s ‘No More Mosquitoes’) surface as a DVD package with the single ‘My Angel Rocks Back And Forth’, which also features remixes from Icarus and Isambard Khroustaliov. March sees a split 7” with the American band Hella. A 74-minute live set entitled ‘Live In Copenhagen’ is released through the Domino website and Four Tet live shows only. The largest Four Tet event to date takes place at the end of April when Kieran curates a bill at London’s Coronet Theatre which includes many of his favourite acts, among them Papa M, Explosions In The Sky, Manitoba, Animal Collective and Fennesz. In May Kieran tours Taiwan and China, performing in Taipei. Macau and Shenzhen. ‘Late Night Tales’, a compilation of some of Kieran’s favourite tracks, is released by Azuli in November. It includes Jef Gilson, Manfred Mann’s Chapter 3, Fairport Convention and Gravediggaz, as well as lost 70s singer-songwriter Linda Perhacs. Kieran also finds time to produce James Yorkston’s second album ‘Just Beyond the River’, and make a tribute single to French 60s jazz musician Jef Gilson for release on the Isma’a label. In December Kieran, Adem and Sam get together for recordings towards the as-yet-unreleased fifth Fridge album.
‘A Smile Around The Face’, the first 12” single from the fourth Four Tet album, ‘Everything Ecstatic’, is released in April. A pointer towards the album itself, the single sees Kieran moving towards a more percussively driven direction. This fact is exemplified in Kieran’s live collaboration with legendary drummer Steve Reid (James Brown, Sun Ra, Fela Kuti). ‘Everything Ecstatic’ is scheduled for release on May 23. Kieran plans an all-nighter at London’s Koko for June 4 featuring Battles and Hot Chip, as well as Steve Reid with his full band. There will be full UK and US tours in the early autumn. A mini-album of Four Tet mixes of experimental hip-hop artist Madvillain is also a planned for release on Stones Throw.
