The Grand Hall of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) is set to reverberate to the sensational Latin sounds of “Sergio Mendes and the Brazilian Invasion” for this year’s FCC Annual Charity Ball in aid of the Po Leung Kuk to be held on Saturday, September 15th.
Sergio Mendes and his original group, Brazil 66 - one of the most internationally successful Brazilian artists of all time - shot to international fame in the late 1960’s with an album that went platinum on the success of one single “Mas Que Nada”, the first Portuguese language hit in the US.
A string of bestsellers followed including “Fool on the Hill”, Scarborough Fair” and “Look of Love”.
Mendes’ collaboration in 2006 with will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas produced the extraordinary album “Timeless” which was honored with the Latin Grammy Award for Best Brazilian pop album.
The FCC Charity Ball is the major annual fundraising event of the FCC Charity Fund which has raised HK$12 million in the five years since its inception for the Po Leung Kuk Scholarship Fund and the Language Training Centre at the PLK headquarters in Causeway Bay.
Through the additional support of generous corporate and individual sponsors, the FCC Charity Fund has awarded university scholarships to 43 students from Hong Kong’s low-income families and has helped maintain the FCC Language Training Centre, a facility that gives 300 PLK children the chance to learn English and Putonghua.
This year, the FCC Charity Fund hopes to open another Language Training Centre in Kowloon to provide language skills to underprivileged children, a skill the Charity Fund recognizes is a necessity for employment not just in Hong Kong but around the region as well. The Charity Fund also assists its scholars with internships and employment support through the vast network of the FCC’s members who represent diverse industries and professions.
The FCC Annual Charity Ball has earned a reputation for its word-class entertainment that has included Martha Reeves, the Supremes, the Temptations, the Beach Boys and Blondie.
This year’s FCC Ball guests will be treated to a vibrant and colourful “Brazilian Carnival” experience complete with Latin drummers, dancers in spectacular costumes and a Brazilian themed menu.
Tickets for the FCC Annual Charity Ball 2007 are priced at HK$1,888 and include pre-dinner cocktails, four-course gourmet dinner with wines and a full evening’s programme of sensational entertainment highlighted by Sergio Mendes and the Brazilian Invasion.
