DUFFY will perform her very first Asian Tour at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore on Sunday, 22nd March 2009 and at the AsiaWorld-Arena in Hong Kong on Friday, 20th March 2009.
The Welsh songstress has come a long way from her little known hometown of Nefyn to dominate global charts with her music. After her raw talent was picked up by Jeanette Lee of the respected Rough Trade Record, Duffy was introduced to producer Bernard Butler (Suede’s ex-guitarist) to record her debut album, Rockferry. The resulting recordings created a contemporary soul sound, reminiscent of artistes such as the Supremes, Al Green, Burt Bacharach and Bettye Swann. Barely two months after she was contracted to A&M Records, Duffy was voted second in the annual BBC News Online poll of industry experts Sound of 2008. Debut single “Rockferry” peaked on the UK charts at number 45 and paved the way for follow up single “Mercy”, which catapulted Duffy to the international arena going straight to number one in the music charts based on digital downloads alone. Ultimately “Mercy” stayed at the top of the UK charts for 5 weeks! The next single, “Warwick Avenue” was third on the singles charts. The debut album, also entitled “Rockferry”, sold 60,000 copies in the UK on its first day of release, outselling the rest of the top 10 combined and becoming one of the fastest selling debuts ever. Global album sales have now surpassed 3 million and the album reached number 1 in over 11 markets worldwide.
Duffy was the fifth best selling artist worldwide in the first half of 2008, selling 2.25 million copies. Rockferry has also been in the top 100 on the Billboards Euro Albums chart for 34 straight weeks and was residing at the number 10 position as of the end of October 2008.
At only 24 years of age, Duffy has become the first Welsh female to achieve a number one pop single in the past 25 years. Critical accolades have mirrored sales success; Duffy was awarded a 2008 Q Award for Breakthrough Act and won the 2008 Song of the Year Mojo Award for “Mercy”. Duffy was also nominated for Album of the Year, Most Addictive Track for “Mercy”, and New Act for the MTV Europe Music Awards. Now playing at both intimate gigs as well as large-scale festivals, Duffy has established her credentials as a talented ‘live’ performer.
