There are days when you'd just love to find a penguin and shake his hand, give him a whopping great kiss to say 'thanks' for helping to make one of the most promising French artists an international success story. The (triumphal) “Emperor’s Journey” helped Emilie Simon's original soundtrack to the film stride to success, breaking the ice between the young sound sculptress and a wider public that hadn't yet tasted the enchanting delights of her imaginary world. Originally from Montpellier in South of France, Emilie Simon spent most of her formative years in her father’s home studio, never missing a chance to watch the visiting musicians and gaze in wonder at the glowing ballet of LEDs and VU meters. Fifteen years later, Emilie is now a musician too, not to mention a singer-songwriter and sound engineer. Over the years, she has learnt to orchestrate string sections, delved into the mysteries of the thorniest contemporary musical genres at the IRCAM (Acoustic/Musical Research and Co-ordination Institute) and finally set her heart on pop. Undoubtedly influenced by family tradition, she writes and shapes most of her music at home, grappling alone with guitar, electronic paraphernalia and an instrument vital to the proper expression of all the others: her brimming, limitless imagination. Her first album Emilie Simon was awarded "Best Electronic Album" in 2004 at the French Music Awards. The Emperor’s Journey won the "Best Original Soundtrack" at the French Music Awards in 2006 and was nominated for “Best Original Score” in the 2006 César Awards. And her new album, Vegetal , which was released in 2006, feels like a stroll in a magical garden full of secrets and fairy blossoms. Emilie Simon has given new life to French pop and electro. She is one of the most eloquent windows to contemporary French music. Her gift for finding the perfect musical articulation and resonance, the millions of precise musical details that become clearer and more remarkable each time your hear them, and her blend of electronic beats with subtle live orchestrations make Simon a unique artist, gifted with a beautiful and distinct voice.
