HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ORGANIZE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

The Hong Kong International School’s Film Club, led by five seniors and their Faculty Advisor Richard Friedericks, has already held three film festivals, showcasing local student films. This year, Co-Presidents of the Film Club Indrayudh Shome, 17, and Scott Bassett, 18, have decided to open the festival to all ages and all places. They have also waived all submission fees.

“Our goal is to find and interest as many filmmakers, both established and aspiring, in rediscovering the spirit of filmmaking as an expressive art. There are literally no costs beyond paying the postage to send your film, and very few barriers. We won’t necessarily be looking for the highest budget or most polished productions – rather, we’ll be selecting a wide variety of films to celebrate the diversity in expression and filmmaking.” explains Shome. Film Club Secretary Daniel Quinn, 18, interjects: “We’re trying to turn the festival from an HKIS dominated event into something with a much broader spectrum.”

So far, the Film Club seems to be achieving its goal. Filmmakers ranging from their teens to their 50’s and out of Denmark to Chicago have answered the call. Shome hopes that in the next few weeks, more students enter films. “This is a festival run by students, and it would be nice to see outstanding student films find their way to the festival.”

The festival will take place on April 28th on the HKIS campus in Tai Tam. All film submissions must be received by the 30th of March. All the submission details can be found on the website.
