Meet the artist at the opening reception on Mar 6(Tue) 630-830pm!* Titled "The Flowery Cosmo", Angel Yip is holding her first solo painting exhibition at Culture Club from 5 to 30 March 2007. Born in the baby boom age and grew up in the economic boom era of the city, the artist sees herself as a typical product of colonial education ¡V a couch potato, indifferent to politics. The series of paintings features the artist's skepticism in life, specifically in this city. Angel has pursued themes that are at once personal and universal. She has drawn her imagery from what she has encountered, and infused it with vivid colors that soothe the cynicism. Her pictures are presented in a cartoon-like quality, and a realistic approach at the same time. Angel spoke about her mission to reflect the darker aspects of our glamorized city life. She was inspired to draw in early childhood by the boredom of classroom lessons. All the blank spaces in her textbooks were filled with graffiti, which were her daydreams. Since leaving school, Angel did not draw at all except during department meetings where she was inspired by boredom again.
