"A wonderful mix of vulgarity and gossamer charm" - The New York Post A tale of romance, money and intrigue amidst the glamour of the belle epoque, The Merry Widowbursts onto Hong Kong stage with its delicious interpretation of Franz Lehar's beloved operetta. Set in Paris 1905, a rich and beautiful widow from Pontevedria, Hanna Glawari, wows Parisians and countrymen alike, while the men at the embassy try to persuade Prince Danilo to woo her so her wealth is not lost to their motherland. At the embassy ball in Paris, however, the plan is thwarted as Danilo and Hanna realise they were once young lovers, followed by a series of intrigues and flirtations. Choreographed by Ronald Hynd with music arranged by John Lanchbery, The Merry Widow has established itself as a classic of the 20th century full-length ballet repertoire since its world premiere. International Prima ballerina Margot Fonteyn was featured in the role of Hanna Glawari, her last major ballet role before her retirement from the stage; and John Meehan - now Hong Kong Ballet's Artistic Director - was her Prince Danilo. Highly acclaimed as witty and entertaining, Hynd's choreography will showcase the entire Company with its swirling waltzes, intimate pas de deux, and of course, the French can-can. Together with original, lavish decor of Desmond Heeley and the enchanting music of Franz Lehar, The Merry Widow will offer you a feast of the Parisian charm and romance of days gone by. Choreographer Ronald Hynd will arrive Hong Kong in end of April to stage the ballet with John Meehan. Media interview and rehearsal visit are welcome.
