Bringing a distinct 1960s Paris flavour to the city is Maison, Hong Kong’s new modern European café by restaurant entrepreneur Frank Sun, now open at 202 Queen’s Road Central. Maison is located on the ground floor level of The Putman boutique hotel-apartment, which was designed and opened earlier this year by famed designer Andrée Putman. Operating as a separate entity from The Putman, but carrying the same sophistication and style, Masion is open to the public for breakfast, lunch, dinner and weekend brunch. Maison offers a perfect escape for a relaxed bite to eat within a cosy and comfortable setting. Behind a façade of light tinted glass, the intimate 24-seat café is elegant and classy. High ceilings, soft lighting, crisp white walls, and fresh flowers give off an air of Audrey Hepburn at Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The décor is intentionally understated as the focus of the café is on the high quality food and non-intrusive but attentive service with attention to detail. Duck burgers with foie gras, freshly tossed salads, thin and crispy made-to-order pizzas, market-fresh fish, rich and hearty soups and creative sandwiches will all appear on the menu. The chef will provide a rotating selection of special dishes on a monthly basis. Maison will position itself as a simple, comfortable and classic café with an emphasis on high quality European fare at reasonable prices. Operator Frank Sun, the creative force behind Hong Kong favourites Tribute and Bricolage, describes his latest venture as “the best of Europe: the soul of France in cooking methods and sauces used, the heart of Italy – a bit rough round the edges and the presentation and serving size of Spain. All this is coupled with a Californian touch through fresh produce and globally sourced ingredients like figs and avocados”. Maison, 202 Queen’s Road Central, Hong Kong.
