Pop Bites Celebrated Hong Kong Chef and Designer Calvin Yeung launches new venture with the opening of gourmet DIY Takeaway & lifestyle concept
Style aficionados can now enjoy a new approach to lifestyle and fine cuisine “with a musical twist” as the ground-breaking Pop Bites debuts in Hong Kong’s SoHo neighborhood, bringing a cool and hip gathering place for vibrant people and stimulating ideas.
Pop Bites, a gourmet boutique and leisure concept, is the latest offering from creative culinary consultancy, Wang Workshop Group. Its owner, celebrated restaurateur and designer Calvin Yeung, describes the concept as “a DIY takeaway that offers perfect harmony between comfort food, great music, love and laughter, all in a one-stop-shop. This is a place where people can get a quick recharge.”
Following its successes with O Sip Hah, modern Thai cuisine with a Euro-twist in Old Bailey Street, Central and Shu Zhai, a Chinese tea and reading room with traditional Dan Jia food in Stanley, the Wang Workshop Group is breaking the mould yet again with Pop Bites.
Yeung worked in collaboration with dance maven Yvonne Siet-Wong (a.k.a. Islandmama) and the celebrated music consultant, spinner and DJ, Wong Chi Chung (a.k.a. Islandpapa) to bring the concept to fruition.
He says, “I wanted a place that was different from others around Central, a place where I myself would like to sit and eat – and this is a place I would like to hang out.”
Pop Bites offers Hong Kong’s busy consumers a wide array of mouthwatering comfort foods, fine wines, exquisite English cheeses, baked goods, pan-Asian cuisine, an ice-cream and coffee bar.
The floor-to-ceiling food and drink cabinets house a selection of Thai style dishes such as “Thai Nam” Chicken rice (HK$48), traditional Chinese dim sum platters (HK$48), and pan-Asian inspired cuisine such as Fried Sole fillet with red curry & steamed rice ($48) and Chinese Daily Soup (HK$28).
In another area, customers can find freshly brewed coffee and a great selection of ice-creams, as well as freshly baked homemade breads, pastries, cakes and desserts. Made-to-order sandwiches are also available.
Other elements of Pop Bites include a range of fabulous cheeses form Europe and the New World, a walk-in wine cabinet with a fantastic selection of vintages, and to ensure customers feel at home, a wide selection of the leading style bibles from around the world along with daily newspapers and local magazines.
All of this takes place against a backdrop of cool, with DJ Wong Chi Chung spinning the sounds and a CD station. The technicolor video wall adds to the eclectic ambience.
Yeung’s enthusiasm about the unique energy of his latest creation is contagious. “Pop Bites is a place for creative exchanges, one where pop singers will share their latest work, and where we plan to host art-related events. It is also a great venue for private parties and events.”
DJ Wong Chi Chung is at Pop Bites every Saturday between 8.00pm – 11.00pm. In addition, there is live DJ music from DJ Ghost Style and DJ Sai So every Thursday and Friday from 12.00noon – 2.00pm.
In an interesting collaboration between Pop Bites and ATV World’s brand new music program, “Live from Abbey Road”, the programme will be aired throughout May with memorable music footage of The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Primal Scream, Massive Attack, Jamiroquai, Kasabian, Corinne Bailey Rae and many more.
Pop Bites is giving away FREE COFFEE upon purchases throughout May.
