Alabama 3’s Sopranos’ Sell Out Larry Love from Alabama 3 chatted to Skrufff this week on the eve of the Brixton band’s upcoming ‘Acoustic & Unplugged’ Australian tour and revealed that they haven’t made millions from licensing ‘Woke Up This Morning’ to US gangster series The Sopranos. “It’s made us some money – but not as much as some have said – the only swimming pool I got out of it is the rubber one in my back garden my daughter uses,” Larry laughed. “The song has been good for us and while we could have made more money had we known that the Sopranos was marching on to fame and fortune it would be churlish to complain. It’s given us a calling card in every country in the world and as long as the Sopranos is shown on TV the royalties will trickle in. I might be able to buy some water wings soon,” he predicted. The techno-country fusionist said they’re still more than happy to play the song at every gig (‘do the Stones get tired of playing Brown Sugar?’) and said he remains as unfazed by money as when Alabama 3 reportedly burned a £2 million record advance from Geffen in the mid 90s. “It wasn’t £2million it was much less than that – but still a substantial amount of money,” he corrected, “It’s very easy to get through large amounts of money when you share it with your friends. I still do!” he laughed, recalling the moment he realised it had all gone. “I woke up in a seedy little bar one morning with no money and no taxi fare home. But that was normal,” said Larry, “I didn’t notice it go and when it was all gone I started the Unplugged and Acoustic band to pay my bar bills,” he added. Alabama 3 play in Melbourne (the Toff In Town; November 9, The Hi-Fi Bar; November 11) and Sydney’s the Basement on November 14. http://www.myspace.com/alabama3uk Article by Jonty Skrufff Subscribe to Skrufff music newsletter at www.Skrufff.com
