Kickin Records Founder Dies Peter Harris, the managing director and founder of legendary independent dance label Kickin Records passed away last Sunday (January 6) after a long battle with cancer. The London label boss helped launch the careers of Grant Nelson, DJ Hype, Phil Asher and Matthew 'Bushwhacka' B and also set up Slip N’ Slide Records, Hardleaders and Stoned Asia, the label headed up by DJ Pathaan. “Peter Harris was a special friend as well as a guiding light in my early days of me diving head-on into the music industry having being introduced to it by a certain David Bowie in 1997,” Pathaan told Skrufff. “Peter was willing to listen and take risks with my ideas and help me set up my first label ‘Stoned Asia Music’ which was affiliated to Kickin Music. He definitely helped me on my way to achieving what I have thus far. I’m so sorry to hear the sad news of his passing away. It’s the ‘inevitable pains of life’ as I recently experienced with my own father’s passing away in October ‘07. No one nor nothing can deny them their peace now. My deepest sympathy and condolences to Peter’s family; may God rest his soul,” Pathaan added. UK club star Phil Asher also paid tribute, saying ‘Peter was one in a billion, a gentleman and a scholar, an oracle of knowledge and a sharp wit. A kick up the backside and a shoulder to cry on when you needed it, and most of all a true and good friend.’ “He was the first person to put me in the studio, if it wasn't for Peter I wouldn't be in this business. I was and will always be in his debt for that,” he added. Dance journalist Lewis Dene also wrote a eulogy recalling happy days working for Kickin between 1999 and 2001. “Anyone that knew Peter will agree he was an incredible man and an inspiration of what could be achieved with little or no resources at your disposal,” said Lewis. “He was a true character who never did anything by the book, and that was what made him so unique and an inspiration to me and so many others. He’ll be missed,” he added. Kickin’ publicist Rosalie Ferrara said all friends of Peter’s are welcome to attend his funeral service, which takes place on Saturday January 19 at All Saints, in Notting Hill, west London. “Peter was insistent on the funeral being held on a Saturday in order that his friends should avoid having to pay the Congestion Charge,” she said, “This was typical of Peter’s humour which, thankfully, stayed with him to the very end.” http://www.kickinmusic.com Article by Jonty Skrufff (Skrufff.com)
