Kiko from Grenoble’s Weather Report Southern French electro-tech type Kiko chatted to Skrufff this week about his decidedly noir-ish new single “Alone In The Dark’ and revealed that he’s avoided relocating to Paris, partly because of the city’s often bleak winters. “Big cities are also too stressful to make music in and with the music I do I don’t see the necessity to live in a big city,” The Grenoble raised star explained.l “Nowadays I live in Valence which is the gateway to the south of France. The weather is better than in Grenoble and for me weather matters.” Kiko ducked answering whether he considers Parisians more arrogant than most replying diplomatically ‘in general, people from the south are more laidback than Parisians and that’s probably due to the weather,” “I only go to Paris to DJ so I’m not there that often,” he added. New single Alone In The Dark has a Vitalic-esque electro-tech flavour with a deceptively stripped back, minimal-ish start though Kiko was equally at pains to avoid revealing whether he likes or dislikes minimal in general. “I pass on this one,” he insisted, “I don’t find any emotion in this style of music. I’m from another generation.” He also chatted about his long-standing friendship with fellow Southern French producers the Hacker and Oxia and suggested growing up together in Grenoble was a key factor in their success. “Probably because there was nothing else to do,” he laughed, “No seriously, it’s because we started together at the same time, we always stayed friends and at one specific moment we decided that we will make our living from our music. We worked a lot to be where we are now.” “My biggest break was being able to open a record shop in 19995 (which closed in ‘98) in Grenoble. That’s where it all started with Oxia, The Hacker and Miss Kittin; in my shop,” he smiled. “And also meeting and staying in touch with Laurent Garnier who put my very first track on an F Com compilation.” Kiko’s best-known tracks to date remain his 1998 single World Cup and 2003’s Monique both of which he created quickly, he recalled. “Often the biggest tracks are those that you produce in a few hours and when it’s done you know it’s a good track but at that point you never know if it’s going to be a hit,” he mused, “Sometimes it only happens because big DJs start playing it then all of a sudden everyone is raving about it.” Alone In The Dark is out on Wall Of Sound Records shortly. http://www.myspace.com/hotbananakiko Subscribe to Skrufff music newsletter at www.Skrufff.com
