Tony Wilson’s Way Manchester authorities are considering renaming Whitworth Street West Tony Wilson Way, Anthony H Wilson Way or Wilson Street West, as a tribute to Factory Records/ Hacienda guru Tony Wilson, who died last month aged 57.
"We need two thirds of people to agree,” a city councilor told the Manchester Evening News, “But I have gone round all the blocks and I am confident people will want to make history on that street", he added.
Skrufff man-in-Berlin Mark Reeder (who, in the 80s, was Factory Records’ man-in-Berlin) was pleased by the news, suggesting, “I think Tony would be equally humbled and honoured by this idea; Although I think the name of the street should be chosen very carefully,” he added. Chicago City Authorities similarly honoured (still alive) Frankie Knuckles several years ago, be renaming the street where legendary club the Warehouse was on as ‘Frankie Knuckles Way, to the delight of the house pioneer, he told Skrufff last year. “I’m thrilled to have it, I really am, and one of my favourite restaurants to go and have breakfast in Chicago happens to be there on that street,” said Frankie. I don’t eat in that restaurant every time when I am at home, but when I have friends in from out of town, the first thing they want to see is Frankie Knuckles’ Way. We go there for breakfast and to have a look at the street sign because they get such a big kick out of it.
