Torquay Facebook Party Terrifies Police Cornish Police are planning an emergency 24 hour blanket ban on sales of alcohol in and around Torquay this weekend (July 4) after revellers announced they’re to stage ‘the biggest beach party ever’ in the area. Local police chief Superintendent Chris Singer vowed to disrupt the free party as much as possible, introducing the total alcohol sales ban as soon as he knows which beach is being targeted. "The event is likely to cause disruption and difficulty for our community. The supply and consumption of alcohol would add to those difficulties,” the Superintendent said in a statement. "I fully understand making the order would be an unprecedented step, and one which would not be taken unless fully justified,” he claimed. Local retailers told reporters such a ban could be commercially ‘catastrophic’ while self-described ‘partygoer’ Simon Templar (one of ten thousand, police fear will come) told the Metro he was equally unimpressed with policing tactics. 'If we, the people, want to hang out on a beach all weekend, then why shouldn't we be allowed to?” he pointed out. The Metro newspaper subsequently claimed the party had been ‘cancelled’ though police chief Singer stressed he’s keeping "large number of resources in place" if revellers turn up over the weekend. "We are seeing to make sure we are in a position to disrupt it,” he vowed, “Police have - and will use - powers to seize sound equipment and will arrest offenders,” he said. and threatened to continue their ‘zero tolerance’ assault on anyone partying without a license. “Last year we had in the order of 35 raves in our part of the county.
