Hungary Fashion Police Tie Tax

Authorities in Hungary announced this week that they’re to impose a sales tax on ties, in response to a renaissance in tie sales in the Eastern European country.

“Good design is after all a sign of culture,” Hungarian Government minister Maria Schneider explained, “So it is right that the culture ministry should benefit from it.” (Metro)

The Hungarian authorities’ move came as Florida newspaper the Orlando Sentinel raved about the return of neckwear amongst American youth this week, suggesting baseball caps and T shirts could finally be on the way out.

“Dress like Dad in golf shirt and khakis? Not likely, if you're a trendy young guy (TYG),” the Sentinel declared, “But borrow a few items from Granddad's closet -- an ascot (cravat), vest or pocket square? Now you're talking.”

“This spring, TYGs are swapping their T-shirts, sweats and baseball caps for dress shirts, blazers and derbys,” the paper declared. “They also are discovering ties -- preferably narrow and patterned with stripes, plaids or neat geometrics. They may even add a tie bar, scrounged from Granddad's dresser drawer or the local vintage shop.”

The paper recommended David Beckham as a ‘trendsetter’ to copy, as did Scottish newspaper The Scotsman who this week singled out the almost-past-his-sell-by date soccer player’s decision to grow a beard as an indicator that facial fur is back.

"I think beards look great on men and they're definitely fashionable," Grazia fashion editor Melanie Rickey told the Scottish tabloid, “I spoke to (designer] Marc Jacobs at the weekend and he told me he's growing a beard, so that's evidence straight from the horse's mouth that they're a definite trend,” she suggested.
