Smoking At Home Banned In California

Council officials in Belmont, California passed new legislation this week which makes smoking illegal in almost all flats and homes in the city.

Under the new regulations, smokers living in apartment blocks will now only be allowed to light up in ‘designated outdoor; with authorities prosecuting whenever neighbours snitch on each other.

New of the ultra-strict ban (which also prohibits smoking from all outdoor cafes and open air smoking areas connected to clubs and restuarants) emerged as cops in Scranton, Pennsylvania arrested a woman for swearing at her toilet this week, when an off duty officer who lived nearby heard her cursing at her loo.

Ms Dawn Herb now faces up to 90 days in jail, the Times-Tribune reported this week, after being charged with ‘disorderly conduct’ after she ignored the cop’s orders to ‘keep it down’.

"The toilet was overflowing and leaking down into the kitchen and I was yelling for my daughter to get the mop," Ms Herb told the newspaper, "It doesn't make any sense. I was in my house. It's not like I was outside or drunk,” she pleaded.

In more domestic crime news, William Antonio Serrano, 22, was remanded in custody in a Texas jail this week, after he allegedly stabbed to death his flatmate in a drunken argument.

Mr Serrano reportedly stabbed his victim repeatedly after being taunted over his ‘smelly feet’, the Washington Post reported.

The story could have ominous implications for clubland, judging by comments on Judge Jules’ blog this week, in which he highlighted (not for the first time) an increasingly alarming consequence of the recent UK smoking ban.

“Turnmills is always good, in fact it’s legendary. The only snag was that I could smell quite a lot of BO (body odour) from the crowd,” Jules complained, “The smoking ban has left many late night dance clubs often smelling unsavoury to say the least. Scented dancefloors must surely follow,” he predicted. (JudgeJules.net)
