About Ministry of Sound
Ministry of Sound – the club – opened in London in September 1991 and has since established a cult following among clubbers worldwide.
Celebrating its 15th Birthday this year, the venue remains at heart of the brand as it’s where the story began and has also been the catalyst for the company’s many brand ventures and extensions.
Inspired by the US house music movement James Palumbo, Ministry of Sound’s founder and visionary, established Elephant & Castle in London as the venue’s location and opted for an unused bus depot for its infrastructure due to its raw and unkempt warehouse character that was the dominant clubbing environment of the early 90’s.
The vision was to import many of the world’s most famous DJs to the UK enabling dance music fans access to the music they adored and the DJs that played and produced it. And of course supply this on a soundsystem like nothing ever experienced before in clubland, an achievement the venue can still boast today. A vision that has become ingrained into the Ministry of Sound philosophy, as the brand now enables dance music fans worldwide access to their favourite form of music via a number of channels including internet, radio, mobile, albums, singles, global tours and venues in London, Egypt and Singapore .
For many years Ministry of Sound, London has been hailed as the ‘House of House’ as DJ input and musical output has always concentrated on the many genres of house music. As dance music has evolved, the club output has consistently been at the forefront of the scene with its DJ line up and musical policy delivering over and above the clubbing call of duty. Ministry of Sound is the only club in London to currently hold EXCLUSIVE RESIDENCIES with Pete Tong, Deep Dish, Sander Kleinenberg, DJ Sneak, Smokin Jo, Nic Fanciulli, Yousef, Mark Knight & Steve Angello.
Saturday nights at Ministry of Sound have consistently remained loyal to the house music circuit with the current ‘Saturday Sessions’ inviting clubbers from far and wide to indulge in the many genres’ that house music employs - all played by the world’s most revered and talented DJs and producers.
Friday nights have been slightly more varied in style. With the launch of Smoove back in 2000, an urban night that continued for five successful years and also the launch of Switch in 2005 which established itself as the freshest and most upfront of all the capital’s club nights presenting an eclectic mix of Drum & Bass and Hip Hop.
Ministry of Sound, London is a venue that not only started a worldwide music and lifestyle brand but also created the UK’s clubbing movement as we know it today. It introduced the DJ to the dancer, the promoter to the party and the establishment to the movement. ___________________________
MUTINY Biography
Dylan Earl Barnes and Rob Davy have been making music together as Mutiny for the past eleven years. But then you most probably know that.
Since 1996, Mutiny’s sonically diverse single releases, have earned them both critical acclaim, and fans far and wide. DJ Sneak described Secrets as "an incredible disco groove, with a mind-blowing vocal"; while MAW liked Bliss so much, they licensed it for release on their own US label. "A swirl of 90s skippety beats, and dark basslines, which suddenly resolve into a beautiful vocodered breakdown" cooed Mixmag, about Bodybreaker. Mutiny featuring D-Empress New Horizons, meanwhile bubbled here, there and everywhere, as an underground vocal hit for months, before being propelled toward the top of the club charts after being picked up by Azuli.
Then came their first album ‘In the Now’ picked up by Virgin to world acclaim and featuring the Club and Top 40 hits ‘Secrets’ and ‘The Virus’. “A fantastic album… the best dance album of the year” enthused Darren Emerson, and was championed by a diverse range of DJ’s from Roger Sanchez through to Jacques le Cont, John Carter, Sander Kleinenberg and Bobby and Steve amongst many others.
Having left Virgin in pursuance of more freedom, they have remixed artists such as Sophie Ellis Bextor, Robbie Williams, E-Smoove, Chicken Lips and Audio Bullys, as well as production for labels such as Southern Fried, East West, Warners, Sony, and many other independents.
After forming a strong partnership with Darren Emersons label Underwater, they released the huge underground record “Yaself”, which received fantastic reactions across the globe. Having released Yaself on Underwater, Mutiny went on to release the compilation with Emerson ‘Underwater Vol 2’ and the club anthem "Holding On" featuring Lopraine Cato, and then the follow up to “In the Now”... "Yada Yada", which again received much acclaim throughout the Dance world, and brought them to the attention of far flung territories such as Japan and Australia.
Touring then followed, with South America, Asia and Australia amongst many others, after which the lads set up new residencies at home and abroad.
First was their own dirty jacking affair, aptly titled “Mutations” which also saw releases on their label "Sunflower" follow suit.
Then came the Womb residency, which is still a fantastic party to this day , and Mutiny regularly visit Japan and Womb in particular, to do their Yada Yada party to one of the best crowds in the world, and certainly one of the best clubs. Other recent tour dates include... Exit festival in Serbia (30,000 people), Russia, Denmark, Italy, Ibiza and many more.
After the Yada Yada album the lads moved on to other areas as well, by producing acts like Sandy Thom, and remixing various artists including Fat boy Slim, Andrea Wilde and Stereo MC's.
2007 sees them signed for a weekly show on Ministry of Sound Radio, and after many hours head down in the studio, have just completed an album by Myomi, a hot new band that features the vocal talents of "Amber Jolene," not forgetting production of a string of records, to be released by Southern Fried and other prominent labels.
Ibiza called again with the dates at Jade Jagger's Jezabel party at Pacha, while their label Sunflower is preparing to release some new Mutiny material, eagerly anticipated by the hungry underground.
