Win A Pair of Tickets to DJ T-Base this Saturday at Heat
Friday, 11 April 2008
Describing his music as “anything which is not ‘techy’, DJ T-Base – Natty J. Saphakkul says “my DNB set can be from liquid to hard jump up”.
He owns and operates Jazzbah Records, a DJ friendly record shop in Bangkok, and will play Hong Kong this coming Saturday.
1. Who were your earliest influences? Common, Jazzy Jeff, Naughty by Nature, Public Enemy.
2. Who are your current influences? Kyoto Jazz Massive, Digital.
3. How did you get into DJing? Maybe pretty much the same as other DJs – I wanted to learn scratching, so I got my first Technics SL-1200, only one side, when I was 11 years old.
4. Who’s the most famous person who’s been to Jazzbah Records? I can’t really say who was the most famous who dropped by my shop, but I can say most of the big-name DJs who came to play in Bangkok always show up such as John 00 Flaming, DJ Zinc, DJ Marky, Adam Freeland, etc.
5. Who’s the person you respect the most who’s been to Jazzbah records? I respect every customer, as they are very happy when they get their good music. I love people like that who still dig the records on the stack, but the most memorable customer was this seven-year-old boy who knew a lot about nu-jazz, broken beat stuff. We had a chat for a few hours about music, I was very surprised.
6. If you weren’t a DJ/record shop owner, what would you be doing now? Teacher, I love teaching and do it half of the week. I’m teaching music technology at the BPS, the British programme international school.
7. What and where was the best gig you’ve ever played? It was the big festival in Tao island, south of Thailand, on one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. People always go crazy when you play DNB tunes on a party island like that.
8. Have you ever played Hong Kong before, and if so, where was the gig and what was it like? No, I never have. This is the first time but I heard from Dan Nu:Tone and DJ Suv that it’s good, so I can’t wait to play. Big up to Magnetic Soul crew.
DJ T-Base will be appearing alongside local Magnetic Soul DJs - Cookie, Saiyan, Blood Dunza, Teem, and Fat Demon this Saturday at Heat in Wan Chai.
