It’s no wonder that Alice Russell has made a name for herself as UK’s finest soul singer. Russell’s second solo “My Favorite Letters” will disappoint cynics who suffer from second release syndrome. Russell’s talents are definitely reinstated in this twelve track release, highlighting a continuum of sheer talent evident in her solo debut “Under the Munka Moon”.
The album is produced and co-written with TM Juke, who has waved his Brighton beat wand sporadically in “What We Want!”, only to complement Russell’s purely gifted vocals. The vocals are definitely one of a kind sultry, with variations in tracks like “A Fly In The Hand” where Russell gets a bit dirty.
As a whole the album is a beautiful collage of soul music history that takes influences from gospel, hip hop, northern soul blended with present day broken beat, electronic and funk highlights. The listening experience can be likened to eating a warm chocolate with a liquid center, seductive, smooth and exquisitely divine! One to treasure, nu-jazz junkie or not!
