Functional breaks’ outstanding Beats & Bobz mix series Volume 3 has recently hit the music stands, this time bringing the best from one of the nu-skool breakbeat masters Tayo. Tayo’s mix follows closely behind Will White’s contribution to Volume 2 of the Beats & Bobs series in time, but in style is dramatically different.
Since the release of Y4K over a year ago Tayo has admittedly been spending extra time in the studio revving things up on the dub front and his new mix on “Beats & Bobz 3” has been described as “dubby, with lot of basslines and a controlled aggression” by Tayo himself. He shouts he has hit a point in his career where everything has become fresh and exciting again.
The beginning of the album starts off in true Tayo style with the 1995 Smith & Mighty dub track “Down in Rwanda”. This dub vibe stretches the duration of the album, although the slower warm-up opening track offers no insight into the later high intensity dancehall breaks. From the reggae vocals of Freq Nasty’s “Come Let Me Know” to the striking beats of Breakneck’s “Uplink” this album is fresh and fierce, and one that should make full use of your speaker capabilities.
