On Thursday 9th September, BBC Radio 1 is celebrating legendary DJ Annie Nightingale’s four decades at the station with a night of programmes dedicated to her outstanding broadcasting career.

Since becoming BBC Radio 1’s first female DJ in 1970 Annie has been at the forefront of new and groundbreaking music in the UK, with a rare ability to move with the times and appeal to new audiences throughout the years.  From Punk rock and New wave to Acid House and modern Breaks, Bassline and Drum & Bass, Annie has brought the music of hundreds of artists and bands to millions of listeners – in her own irreverent style.‬

Along with her status as BBC Radio 1’s longest serving presenter, Annie’s career has taken her on the road with some of the most iconic bands in history, including The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Police.  She continues to travel all over the world to DJ at international clubs and festivals, and is known as Queen of the Breaks for her championing of breaks, bass, beats and mixes in her current weekly BBC Radio 1 show and beyond.

UK research organisation Mintel has revealed that an average of six night clubs a week closed in the UK in a trend they attributed to the economy and the availability of cheap alcohol in supermarkets in particular.

“Nightclubs were struggling prior to the recession as people increasingly opted for late-night bars,” said Mintel’s senior drinks analyst Jonny Forsythe.
 
“However, the economic downturn has accelerated their decline meaning that consumers — and particularly nightclub’s core target of 18-24 adults — have much less disposable income to spend on their leisure activities.”

The drinks expert revealed that 355 clubs closed in 2009 (13% of Britain’s 2,722 total) with young people increasingly drinking at home and avoiding partying in public altogether.

Lady Gaga urged her fans to turn the other cheek towards Westboro Baptist Church members, this week, after the God Hates Fags organization mobilized protestors to carry ‘God Hates Lady Gaga’ placards outside her concert in St Louis, Missouri.

"Although we have had protesters before, as well as fundamentalists at the show, this group of protesters are hate criminals and preach using lude [lewd) and violent language and imagery that I wish I protect you all from,” Gaga declared via Twitter.

Legendary dissident feminist Camille Paglia demolished the marketing behind manufactured pop icon Lady Gaga, this week, in a devastating critique comparing her to some of the original pop stars she’s closely modeled on.

“In the 1980s, commercial music boasted a beguiling host of sexy pop chicks like Deborah Harry, Belinda Carlisle, Pat Benatar, and a charmingly ripe Madonna. Late Madonna, in contrast, went bourgeois and turned scrawny,” she noted.

Scottish psychologists warned that kilt-wearing Scotsman projecting ‘hard man, tough guy images’ are secretly suffering from an identity crisis, this week, an expose in the Herald Scotland titled ‘Male disorder – what’s wrong with Scottish men?’
