Tell us a little bit about how you got started as an artist? Who was your biggest inspiration?
We started making music since we were children, each one of us with different influences, from techno to hip hop to punk rock….we met 12 years ago in the recording studio of a label based in Turin, Italy, where we live, and tried to start working together on some original tracks…then 5 years ago we started releasing mashups and bootlegs, and that was the beginning of Djs From Mars….the inspiration of this was the early days of Hip Hop, when samples were uncleared, and tracks were a kaleidoscope of different sounds coming from every music style, think about De La Soul and Beastie Boys first albums…that was a big influence for us…in the same time, we were resident djs in our hometown and since we were tired of playing 1000 times the same commercial tracks, we started working on our own edits…that turned into an actual project in no time, and then we focused 100% on this idea.
Will this be your first time in Macao? Is there anything that you are looking forward to doing or seeing in particular?
We are always very curious about new places! We travelled a lot in the last 3 years, from Australia to USA, from Brazil to China, from Canada to Indonesia and so on…but we never been in Macao so we are definitely excited about it! We don’t expect something in particular, we always like to travel and be surprised by places and people…(of course we cannot miss the chance to eat good Asian food!)
What was your favourite memory of 2012 and what do you have planned for 2013?
2012 was great for us! We don’t have a “special memory” but we love to remember all the places we’ve been to, all the gigs and the people we met, it’s a kind of diary we like to keep in our minds…for sure we’re happy to play a lot in the USA, people is going crazy with electronic music over there, and because of that, we managed to have a monthly residency in the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas, probably the capital city of fun…that’s something we never expected for sure, and we are happy that it happened without any specific plan…we’ll always remember also the World Dj Festival in Korea, special event, massive crowd, epic atmosphere, probably one of our best gigs ever…in 2013 we’ll keep on goin to USA and Las Vegas every month, and we’re currently at work on our new single which is going to be released soon, we hope in September…about unofficial releases, we just released “BOOTZILLA”, a collection of 25 new mashups we did in collaboration with Daddy’s Groove, Jason Nevins, Mobin Master, Rave Radio, Dj Schmolli, Loo&Placido, Smashup Derby and Dabio, and we received a lot of great feedbacks…so we are happy and busy in these days!
What can we expect from your upcoming performance at Cubic Macao?
power, energy, melody! These are the 3 main ingredients of our recipe….we like to push hard, we love to see people sing!
we think a perfect dj set is the one in which people can dance and get wild to the hardest sounds, but they always have to be entertained by vocals and melodies they can sing along to….sometimes pure EDM can be boring…and of course, a pure commercial set is not so exciting, cause you listen to songs you listened to 100 times….our idea of a set is to bring melodies into our electro house environment, creating a new product, that everyone can enjoy
What are your top three touring essentials?
- Laptop (since we tour a lot, we try to work also out of the studio….otherwise we’ll release 1 track every 5 years some of the best ideas and tracks were born while touring!)
- Swimsuit (we love it when we play in sea places, so we can chill at the beach and have a swim…that’s something we miss in our hometown so we take advantage of touring in sea places!)
- Empty space in luggage (we love to buy everything when we travel, clothes, food, drinks, technical equipment, literally EVERYTHING! – so we need some space in the luggage which will be always fulfilled while coming back home!)
What is the weirdest thing that you’ve seen from the stage?
we’ve seen soooo many strange things but we remember this girl last week in Croatia, she was pushed against the barriers in the first row, she was dancing and screaming like crazy, like everyone else around…then suddenly she falls down and start to puke like there’s no tomorrow! That was a bit sad for her, but freaking hilarious seen from the stage! Hope she’s ok now!
Do you have any pre gig rituals?
no but we always try to be at the venues a little bit before the show so we can catch the vibe, see the people, listen to the dj playing before and understand the situation…we played in stylish clubs with 30-35 years old glamour people and in underground squats with punk rockers and hip hoppers ready to rave, so we prefer to see the club a little bit in advance and try to get the atmosphere!
Who in your opinion are the best up-and-coming artists at the moment?
we think Zedd in an underrated genius! His album is pure perfection, a pure blend of electronic and melody, but he still didn’t get the place he deserves in the scene…and we love the style of some good friends of us, Nari&Milani and Daddy’s Groove are goin quite big this year, we hope they’ll reach the top of the EDM scene since they totally deserve it, they’re doin quite a good job with tracks, and we hope this will break doors for a brand new EDM Italian scene!
If you weren’t an artist what would you be doing?
Probably we would be unemployed junkies asking for food and money in the streets…this is the only thing we can do and every day we feel so lucky that we can make a living out of that….that’s why we try to work hard and improve every single day!
