As one of the most successful and talented electro-tech producers to emerge in the last four years, German producer Kris Menace is amply qualified to discuss the health of the music business and his prognosis is uncompromisingly bleak,
“Tracks are here to promote artists nowadays. Labels don’t really earn anything anymore, which makes it hard to help and develop new projects or artists,” he says.

20 years after he helped launch acid house as both Mixmag’s first ever editor and as one of the first British superstar DJs, Dave Seaman remains at the top of his game, touring the world relentlessly, producing and releasing mix CDs. Writing on his blog recently, however, he suggested his new Renaissance ‘Masters’ mix could be his last, admitting ‘the allure of just doing regular free podcasts grows ever more appealing’. He also complained about being frustrated about red tape and tracks being blogged instantaneously though chatting to Skrufff today, he’s more ambiguous about compilations and the prospects of him doing more in the future.

So you play House music. What’s it all about? House to me means a way of life, I live and breathe this music!
What makes a track soulful, as compared to vocal/funky house?
Well in general i would say soulful house tends to have a lot more live musicianship involved , better quality production and much more of a feeling to it . Having said that i think soul really comes down to the emotion put into a track . There are techno and tech house records that I would say are soulful, but at the end of the day it's how you interpret music.
“Nothing really went wrong, it just became more demanding on my time and was beginning to alter my priorities, which is not what I set out to do.” 12 months after he suddenly quit Radio 1, Eddie Halliwell is back on the airwaves syndicating a weekly show called Fire It Up Radio though chatting to Skrufff this week, says he has no regrets about leaving Britain’s hugely influential radio station.
