DJ Nakadia Interview

Articles - Interviews

ImageDJ Nakadia will be DJing in Hong Kong on the 28th August at Lava and we got to chat to her before she returned to the city.

1. Your bio is quite impressive, you've played 200 clubs across 46 countries in the last 5 years. What have been your favorite places to play and why?

That is so hard to answer because there are really so many cool places in the world. I always enjoy the parties in Berlin. So many artists are there all the time and there is so much inspiration in that city. Plus the vibe is always great. Besides Berlin I enjoy very much Italy – they have some of the best clubs in the world I think.

2. Which artists have you enjoyed playing with and why?

Normally I am booked as the guest DJ and there is a resident DJ warming up for me. Only sometimes there are 2 or more guest DJs, besides the festivals of course. I really enjoyed playing with Onur Ozer in a few events this year He is so cool and our styles are pretty similar. A great artist!

3. What artists do you look up to?

I have big respect for artists like Richie Hawtin or Sven Veath because the way they changed the music. Most times I listen to the big name Djs I am very dissapointed. The ones that became big in the 90s are often still stuck in the 90s and did not really develop. For me, the greatest Djs of today are people like Loco Dice or Onur Ozer.

4. Who have been your main influences?

My biggest influence was for sure Timo Maas! He changed my life several times! The first time was when I listened to him in 2004 and I suddenly did not enjoy trance anymore ;-)  In 2006 he told me that I should choose one way – commercial or cool, because at that time I was playing somewhere in between. Of course my choice was “cool” because I really get sick from all the commercial crap out there, so I told him and he handed me tons of vinyl promo that he received. Suddenly I had  the most amazing music on my decks and that chanced my life completely. Now I get my own music of course, but thanx to Timo I became the DJ that I am now.

5. How do you classify your sound?

I am a party animal, so my music is quite pumping and powerful most times. I try to find the fine line between cool and uplifting. Since I love to play long sets, I like to bring people from one end of the scale to the other – that means everything between deep house and pumping techno. But at parties where I play only 2 or 3 hours I have to skip the warmup part and get to the point quite quickly.

6. You have been producing tracks and I remember that you were in the beatport top 10 at least once. How many tracks have you produced so far and which do you prefer DJing or producing or both and why?

I always work with different studio partners. Producing is such a complicated thing, especially since I am based in Berlin for production. The producers around here are so experienced and talented, I could never deliver any quality like that on my own. I have Logic in my laptop to think of ideas and come up with grooves or sounds, but what these guys in the studio do with it afterwards is something I will never be able to do alone. I have produced close to a hundred tracks I think, but most I never released. I just play them in my sets or give them to some friends. A total of 9 tracks have been released so far. A lot of new new material is nearly finished and some great labels are interested, so I plan to have releases on a regular basis from 2010 onwards. In the studio I feel like in school – it is nice to learn, but I love to rock the dancefloors and I need the interaction with the people. I am a DJ in the first place.

7. You have a very busy DJ schedule these day and you are living in Berlin most. You do come back to Asia for a break now and then, what do you do when you are back in Thailand?

I still dont have my resident visa for Berlin, but I expect to get it in April 2010. After that I will stay in Berlin most of the year. At the moment up and down every 3 weeks. It is terrible! I hate it so much. But because I can only stay in Europe 90 days in every half year I have to go home to Thailand in between the Europe gigs. I enjoy my time home in Thailand very much and try to relax there, but I also have a lot clubs ask me to play and I enjoy to play, so I do it. It is a very expensive and difficult life at the moment, so next year I hope it get easier.

8. You've played in Hong Kong a few years ago. What was your impression? Are you looking forward to coming back?

Last time I played in Hong Kong I was still a little baby Dj ;-) ha ha... I think it is 4 years ago now, at the start of my career. It was fun and I met some nice people in Hong Kong. After all this years I really look forward to play in Hong Kong this time. It is so great to play at a club where people will enjoy my sound and not ask me if I can put hip hop on, or something like that ;-) I cant wait for this party on August 28.

9. You have started work on a reality TV show, can you tell us more about that?

The idea of this reality TV show came up at Loveparade 2008. The guys from loveparade produced a feature about me and we had so much fun at the filming, the producer said we should make a series. So – after the Loveparade we sat together and thought about it more. Normally the filminghad to start this summer, but Europe is in a deep crisis, like most of the world, so we have to wait till the financial situation is a bit better. Hopefully we will start the filming for this project during Loveparade Johannisburg in November 2009.
