Interviews
Franco Bianco: Human Imperfection and Climate, is Secret Island’s Key
Switzerland based Argentine tech-house producer Franco Bianco.
Jonty Skrufff: What did you think of this year's event? (compared to previous years: what stood out?)
Franco Bianco: “Personally I think this year’s event was better organized than before and luckily the weather collaborated in a positive way with the development of the festival. People were much more careful with the environment and we are gradually understanding the concept of going every year to demonstrate to the world and all those who attend, that it is possible to organize a festival in a different way without the bullshit of VIP, where all are equal, and where all help simply for the pleasure of collaborating. I think the political side of the festival is an aspect that should be more developed but I am aware that this point is very clear to Björn the organizer, Little by little, things are going to be happening by themselves without being forced.”
Skrufff: All the DJs always play for free: what is it about SIN that makes you want to be involved?
Franco Bianco: “The first year I went was in 2007, and I realized that the concept was different. It was not a festival like any other. It was a place where you can share a unique and indescribable moment with new people. We know very well that the organizer is not doing the event to make money, and that there are no economic profits, but for sure there are spiritual ones. Secret Island is a clear example of the right model for society to follow and you could certainly say that it provides exactly what I’m looking for in terms of my belief in socialism. Everyone on the island has the same rights, everyone cares for the environment and there are no social classes or of any significance, instead we are all in harmony. Of course, it demands an effort, but one well worth taking.”
Skrufff: What makes SIN different from other festivals?
Franco Bianco: “Everything. I've been travelling around the world with my music and participating in different festivals in many countries for years and it is very clear that Secret Island is unique, not least for the simple reason that it is non-profit. From that starting point, 100 differences follow.”
Skrufff: How much of a problem is the weather; how do you handle storms and being soaked (without getting fed up?)
Franco Bianco: “The climate is vital to understand the concept of the party. The mixture of adrenaline, rain and wild experience, puts us in touch with nature, where we learn that we can not always go against the climate in comparison to the last Olympic Games where the rain was dispersed by scattering chemicals in the sky. At Secret Island, people arrive with a respect for the climate and learn to enjoy it, in all its glorious dimensions and variations. It shows that we are not masters of this planet as many people think in most capitalist societies. We are here for a cosmic coincidence of gases and explosions. When we understand that we came to a place to take care of it for the one who comes behind us, things will start to change globally. Putting yourself in the place of the others is what the Secret Island project is about.”
Skrufff: What would you change about SIN?
Franco Bianco: “Absolutely nothing. Everything has a reason. Everything is perfectly balanced. The human imperfection and climate, is the key to this magical island, where we'll never be able to find something similar somewhere else (at least for now!).”
Skrufff: What advice would you offer someone who's never been before?
Franco Bianco: “To let yourself flow. To go without expectations... to flow is the key concept here. Of course, people who often travel to Ibiza, or the clear advocate of the capitalism will feel a little out of their habitat.”
