Jim Breese Interview
How do you feel playing in Hong Kong for the second time?
Very, Very excited. The city alone- it's so intense and unlike anywhere else I've travelled in the world. When I think back to past gigs, the Hed Kandi Hong Kong launch in April 2007 was a definite highlight. The event caused a media frenzy outside of the venue, with the press literally clamouring for quotes. And inside... packed with an international clubbing crowd who partied until the early hours. There was a real sense of glamour surrounding the party.
You became the resident DJ of Café Mambo at the age of 19, what is your own expectation in the future?
I'm lucky to be doing the job that I love, so the goal is to continue living the dream! But beyond that- forging a strong career within the industry- and not just as a DJ, but running a label & developing a brand.
You had a few massive gigs this year like “White Party Closing” in Brazil, World Series in San Francisco, “Space Invaders Party” in Bali and also the Astrakhan Birthday celebrations with 10,000 Russians. Which one is the most impressive and why?
All of these parties were equally impressive in different ways. For instance in Russia, I wasn't briefed on the party, so I turned up to find a concert stage built in the cities central square, surrounded by thousands of people. I was shocked! Over in Bali, Ku De Ta has thrown some of the most insane parties that I have ever witnessed. But my greatest personal achievement was in June, performing at Supperclub in San Francisco. Hed Kandi recorded the session live & it was later released entitled 'World Series Live: San Francisco.' It’s in all good record stores now..!
Who are your top 3 favourite DJs?
I once played with Francois Kervorkian in the Mambo days. He was doing the sunset and he really captured the moment, playing Ambient, Dub, Disco, House... That was special. In the UK, Pete Tong has devoted his life to House music & continues to push the scene forward with an open mind, so he'd be up there. And finally the Cafe Del Mar legend Jose Padilla- famous for his Ibizan residency & compilation series which launched 'Balearic Chillout' music.
Can you tell us the best set you’ve ever mixed and why?
A few years ago, I appeared on Pete Tong's 'Essential Selection' doing a live 'Sunset Guest Mix' from Cafe Mambo. It was broadcast to millions of people globally & I must say, I was the most nervous I've ever been! You can check it out on www.myspace.com/djjimbreese
What are you busy with at the moment?
In the studio full time... Plus a weekly eclectic show on Ministry Of Sound Radio... Weekly Podcast... Blog... Helping with the various Hed Kandi comps & making sure the brand stay's at the top.
What are your future plans, any new remixes or productions?
It’s ongoing. Nothing to shout about right now.
What would you be doing if you where not a DJ?
I'd be on a Mediterranean beach renting sun beds & selling beer. Now there's an idea..!
Jim Breese will be DJing at Hed Kandi World Series Tour at Club JJs on the 22nd November 2008. For more information visit www.hedkandi.com.hk
