Is it your first time playing in Hong Kong and what are you expecting from it?
It actually isn’t my first time to sing in Hong Kong as I used to tour with bands here, but this is my first own show and I honestly don’t know what to expect. I’m not sure how well people know me and what records have been most successful, as even in Europe different countries react in different ways.
I’m really looking forward to meeting the people and I’m sure its gonna be an amazing glamorous evening and will be a lot of fun, That’s the whole reason why I do so many shows with Hed Kandi now, as it’s a great team of people to work with and I always have a great night.
Being so successful in such a young age, how did you start your career?
I’ve been singing since I was 9 years old, I started working in theatre in London’s West end, then I released my first record at 12 years old which was a record to promote Unicef (the children’s charity of which I was an ambassador).
I worked as a dancer too, backing pop artists and started “go go” dancing in night clubs, this is when I really fell in love with electronic music and decided that’s what I wanted to do with my life.
I’ve been so lucky to work and write songs with amazing producers like David Guetta, Todd Terry and Armand Van Helden. Song writing came later in my career. My first wish was just to be a singer but then I wanted more control and to express my feelings through my music. That’s been my journey so far…
What is your favourite track?
This is such a hard question, my favourite all time record? I have a few, I guess the one that really reaches me is “you got the love” Candi Staton as the lyrics really touch me and her voice….sensational.
Of my own records its “get down” with Todd Terry, it symbolises a change in me, when I realized I was capable than more than I was giving myself credit for…
What other music do you work on other than dance music?
I have worked in lots of different genres of music, I started singing professionally at a young age in musical theatre and was working with some of the world best singers in that world at that time. Then backing singing for Bryan Ferry, Eric Clapton, Roger Walters (Pink Floyd), Ringo Starr (The Beatles) etc and also a few more recent pop singers. This was great experience for me, to be around these amazing artists who have written songs that will stand the test of time, I felt privileged to have met them and hope that I learned as much as I could from those situations.
Also I have written songs for pop artists and acoustic bands as well as dance songs for other singers to perform. I love all types of music, it doesn’t matter what style it is, as long as it makes me feel something and reaches me. Like yesterday I was finishing a writing session in Cornwall (the southern most part of the UK) and we needed up in a pub that was playing live Cornish music, it was amazing and I really got into it, but as an artist I’m very happy working with house and electronic music, but still I appreciate other styles too.
Tell us your best gig you have ever had.
This is a hard question as there’s been so many gigs that have amazed me. I guess playing in Ibiza is always amazing and I get such a buzz just from being on the island as it has just a great energy. I’ve played El Divino with Hed kandi a few times last year and it rocked every time, also as its not a huge venue I can see the faces of the people in the crowd, see them singing a long to the words and could really connect with them, that’s the best!
Also last year in Ibiza I played Pacha with David Guetta too, this was an incredible night as it was my birthday and I hadn’t planned to do a show there with him, I went in to the DJ box to say hi, he stopped the record and said on the mic, “we have a very special guest here tonight, Tara McDonald, its her birthday and I’m gonna ask her to sing for us” the crowd went nuts, I performed our single Delirious and another track we wrote together called “your not alone”. I was so hyped afterwards !
What would you be if you are not a singer?
If I couldn’t sing and I really hope this day never arrives as singing really makes me so happy, even if it wasn’t my job I would still be doing it. As its who I am, part of my soul. But if for some reason I couldn’t I would work for charity or have lots of children or maybe both and I think that would keep me very busy. I’m not the sort of person that likes to stand still, I need lots going on around me, so children would be good.
What is your future plan?
I have so many things that I want to do. I want to do it all and I’m lucky that my job gives me so much. I want to keep moving forward always, keep growing and learning. To have the confidence to follow my heart and to be myself. I’m signing my solo record deal at the moment so this is a really exciting time for me, lots of new opportunities on the horizon and I have great people around me now. I don’t feel like I’m on this journey alone, I feel supported and loved. I just want to keep doing what I’m doing, writing great songs, making records, touring the world, this is my dream and I’m living it.
