X Press 2 Interview
London house legends X Press 2 unveiled remixes of their 1993 classic anthem ‘London Express’ this week, including a brilliant remake by upcoming producer Idiotproof.
The new electro-tech version should even find favour with X Press 2’s own Rocky who chatting to Skrufff in 2005 admitted he rarely played his earlier tracks such as the band’s biggest pop hit Lazy.
“Don’t get me wrong – I still love it – I think it’s an amazing song, but I’m just one of those people that always wants to play the new things,” said Rocky, “There will always be a time when you’ll slip the odd old track into what you’re doing, but I’m always wanting to move it forward; to look for the next thing that’s coming along.”
The track, which featured vocals from former Talking Heads singer David Byrne, topped European pop charts in 2002, reaching number 2 in the UK, though Rocky revealed that its success made little difference to their day to day lives.
“It enabled me to pay a little bit off of my house which is always good, it always comes in handy, but as far as being changing life forever, absolutely not, I still do exactly the same things as I did before it and will continue to do that.”
“It really wasn’t as big a deal as you, or as a lot of people, would think. We did OK out of it financially but that’s all,” he added.
The trio (of Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle) are renowned for playing with 12 decks (or more) simultaneously and all sorts of high tech gadgets, which caused them unexpected problems in 2004, DJ Lottie revealed this week in an interview with Time Out Dubai.
“I was playing on a big stage before X-Press 2 and they had about 24 decks, 38 CDs and 14 mixers,” Lottie told the UAE magazine.
“I was wearing stilettos – a rare occasion – and every time I turned around to change the record, my headphone cord quietly wrapped itself around my big pink high heels,” she recalled.
“On my last track of my set I went to walk around the stage and was pulled unceremoniously flat on my face, with most of the equipment flying off stage after me. X-Press-2 had spare decks and mixers, but I haven’t been invited back to Rio since,” she added.
