ImageBringing the Second Wave of “Predator vs F50” - the adidas Global Football Campaign

A young and talented Shanghai photographer artist, Jennifer Zhou would launch her debut photography exhibition in Hong Kong at Galerie Ora-Ora II @Philia Lounge between Feb 10 – April 30, 07.  Jennifer would like to share with her audience the normal lives of people living in Shanghai through her lens in this show.  To also celebrate the coming of Chinese New Year, we are launching the opening of this artshow with a party “Shanghai Night” at Philia Lounge on Feb 10, 07 from 9pm till late with free entrance.

Artist Statement

The first time I get to know photography was in autumn 2002.  I was studying in Canada and was really stunned by the beauty of the country, therefore, I used a small digital camera and captured every possible moment. With no proper training, I took photos with a carefree spirit. Half a year later, I was so lucky to obtain my first photography assignment.  I was asked to take photos of the logo of an American company which would be used in their advertisements, website, catalogues or any other marketing materials.  I was then able to purchase a more professional camera. it was a great encouragement and the recognition I gained confirmed  my efforts made.  Since then, I became more thoughtful and focused when taking photographs.

After two years in Canada, I went back to China and chose to live in Shanghai in end of 2003.  I was so curious by this modern, yet old, city.  I have started a whole new journey in exploring images, to capture the different faces of the city by my camera, to observe and to understand the people living here.

During this period, I met a photography teacher, Phil Douglis, on the internet, his influence and his help to me is enormous.  He made me understand photography is not just for portraying beauty or recording purpose, but to focus more on expressing ideas and the emotions behind.

I feel that China is changing, a transformation that was not experienced in the past, cities and culture are developing so fast in such a manner that nobody could resist it’s power. At the same time, the older things are diminishing, people are living in conflicts both physically and psychologically with the merging of the new and old.  All these complicated emotions are hiding in the normal lives of everybody but somehow it might be shown unintentionally.  I love to capture these moments because they reflect reality of life.

I feel more and more interested in taking photos of ordinary people and the themes of their normal lives.  I would take my camera and walk along the streets whenever I have time, as I believe no matter how ordinary it looks, everybody has a story behind.  I would wait patiently for the hints of such stories to happen in front of my camera naturally, those are the images that I always look for.  As a female photographer, I tend to be more sensitive and empathetic, I want to get closer to my “models”, I try to understand their stories and their past and through interacting with them I can capture the true facets of their lives.  To me, photography is like an experience of spiritual nourishment, camera is like the bridge to make this happen.

Followed by a risqué retreat at JIA Hong Kong

Valentine’s Day is being celebrated with a ‘Saucy Surrender’ at OPIA, the fashionable award-winning restaurant at JIA Hong Kong in Causeway Bay.

It can also be twinned with Hong Kong’s most risqué overnight package being offered for the romantic occasion.

The 6-course dinner-for-two at chic OPIA, which has been voted Hong Kong’s ‘Restaurant of the Year’, is priced at HK$895 plus 10%.

Guests are greeted with a celebratory glass of Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne and aphrodisiac of three Tasmanian oysters.

Taste buds are next tantalised with a sparkling champagne sorbet and peppered mango salad.

The sensual menu continues with a choice of seared foie gras with caviar, passion fruit cream and baby basil served with iced vodka, or creamy crustacean broth with Dungeness crab tortellini, Boston lobster and roasted Hakkaido scallop infused with spiced vodka.

Third course is a sublime white truffle pot de crème with crispy back pepper and potato.

Main course options are either coco butter-roasted venison chop with marinated butternut pumpkin pistachio nuts, bitter chocolate sorbet and sticky Frangelico
cherries, or olive oil-poached sea trout with fresh chive crust-oyster and cream fraiche potato, beetroot jam and vodka jelly.

Sensual dessert choices are either cinnamon doughnuts with a chilli chocolate ganache centre, orange marmalade-potted strawberries and double cream, or Lady Finger banana tart with double chocolate and black pepper ice cream, baby basil, wild honey, vanilla cream and rose petals.

The romantic dinner is completed with white chocolate and champagne truffles.

For the ultimate Valentine’s, guests can stay overnight at JIA on the ‘Saucy Surrender’ accommodation package specially designed for romance.

With accommodation in a suite or penthouse suite, it promises a night to remember with a tray of six oyster shooters or six fresh oysters served on arrival, along with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Rose Champagne and bouquet of long stemmed roses.

Couples can get into the mood browsing through erotic photography with complimentary copies of Lorenzo’s twin volumes on The Human Form. Body butter is provided for mutual foot massage or sensual amusement.

Guest awake to an “arousing” morning-after breakfast hamper, and leave with a voucher for a pole-dancing lesson by Pole Divas!

The package is priced at HK$5,550 for two for the night in a Studio, or HK$9,999 in a Penthouse, where guests receive additional treats of breakfast served in bed, plus a unique red-leather ‘Proposal Box’ from the luxury lifestyle store Kou.

Six drawers of the box, opened from top to bottom, each contain surprise delights - a chocolate coated cherry, a G-string, bottle of sensual essential oil, aromatic candle, risqué red or virginal white satin ribbons, and ultimately a love note at the end -- to propose marriage or a partnership.

A new study examining levels of sexual attractiveness has discovered that women are significantly influenced by other women's opinions, with men who can attract the smiles of the opposite sex being considered better looking than those who can't.

Scientists at Edinburgh University reached their conclusions by showing men and women pairs of male faces then adding a third photo of a female smiling at some of the men. Researchers discovered men who the woman smiled at were suddenly rated more attractive, the Guardian reported.

"So when you're out in a bar, there's an advantage to being nice to everyone," study chief Dr Ben Jones from the Face Research Laboratory told the Guardian, "Because if they're smiling at you, it's going to make you more attractive."

Men responded differently to their more attractive mates, Indian reported agency Zee News reported, responding if anything jealously to their suddenly successful rivals.

"Within-sex competition promotes negative attitudes towards men who are the target of positive social interest from women," said Zee (quoting the New Scientist).

Dr Jones previously appeared in the national press commenting on another study of attractiveness last year, which claimed that humans are most attracted to men with unconventional distinctive features such as Mick Jagger (his lips) and Tony Blair (his flapping ears) instead of the symmetrical features usually cited as ideal.

"We can clearly show that you get this peculiar fact that humans seem to be more excitable when they see a caricature rather than a normal face," study author Dr Gunter Loffler of Glasgow University said in January 2006. "The more dramatic the faces are, the stronger the response is."
