John Hardy’s Kawung Collection
The John Hardy brand of bold, luxurious handmade jewellery loves to seek out the rich heritage of various cultures for inspiration for new collections. Its design team gives a new twist to ancient motifs, creating imaginative, contemporary pieces that are imbued with romance and intrigue.
A superb example of this is the new Kawung collection that showcases a royal motif used on the famous batik cloth of the Indonesian island of Java.
The motif was once reserved only for Javanese royalty and was a favourite of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. It shows a stylized four-petal coffee flower enclosed in a circle, and is a cosmic symbol representing the four cardinal points of the universe. Batik – the art of drawing on cloth with hot beeswax – was raised to a fine art in the island's palaces, where it was practiced by women of nobility and was imbued with a strong sense of spirituality. One sarong cloth could take months to complete.
The John Hardy collection has interpreted the Kawung motif in several ways, to adorn a range of pieces fashioned out of 18k gold and sterling silver: in gold, in silver and in intriguing combinations of both metals. The design concept is that of an open lattice-work grill that is extremely light and feminine. The pieces mix and match beautifully with other John Hardy collections for an eclectic look.
Highlights of the gold/silver line include cuffs and earrings in sterling silver with the petals of the coffee flower executed in 18k gold. Cuffs are signature pieces of the collection. The Silver Kawung Diamond Pavé line has several fascinating cuffs, with overlapping ribbons of the Kawung motif studded with diamonds.
Sautoir necklaces come in various lengths for a layered look; they include styles in all-gold and gold/silver featuring either large or small circles. The necklaces, including the sautoir pieces and bracelets, offer plenty of movement: check out in particular the silver circle charm bracelets, which are especially chic.
The Kawung Collection from John Hardy is now available in Hong Kong at all Lane Crawford locations.
