Plump DJs
Inspired by top shelf girly mag âPlumper'sâ, the Plump DJs are Lee Rous and Andy Gardener. Riding on the crest of a dance music revival the Plumps have created a sound that has single-handedly smashed the pseudo laddishness out of the nu-skool and brought breakbeat to the forefront of today's dance scene.
The debut mix album âA Plump Night Outâ on Finger Lickin' Records was the biggest selling breaks record to date. Their recent âFabric Liveâ compilation was the biggest seller in the series and the âElastic Breaksâ cover-mount CD with MIxmag sold more copies than any other issue.
Their remixes of Electronauts - âBumperâ and Stakker - âHumanoidâ remain modern classics and singles âElectric Discoâ, âThe Pushâ and âScramâ crossed over to an audience way outside the breakbeat arena. Their music has been used for a Levi's commercial in Japan, numerous Sony Playstation games as well as for Grandstand Ski Sunday and Sky Sports. They've had single of the month, compilation of the month and compilation of the year plus number 1's in dance charts all across the world - in fact if these accolades were translated into gongs their mantelpiece would crack under the weight.
However, the boys are best known for their sell-out DJ shows where they have headlined a 17,000 strong crowd for a new year's party in Sydney, Australia. They are top-of-the-bill residents at London's Fabric as well as regulars at the cream of the UK clubs Bugged Out, The Boutique and Blowpop. Their unrivalled knack to get the good times rolling is just part of the Plumps' swelling success.
In July 2003, the Plump DJs released the breakbeat scene's most eagerly awaited record. A landmark - defining a sound and altering the course of a genre, âEargasmâ smashed the mold to take break-driven music the next level.
An album that wears its heart on its sleeve it encapsulates everything that makes the Plump DJs tick. Pooling Lee and Andy's influence, âEargasmâ is a forthright album of maturity and diversity pulling no punches - from the jacking floor shakers honed by their residency at fabric, to the cerebral, emotive deviations from the breakbeat path. Featuring guest performances by Lou Robinson from Lamb, Gary Numan and Eddie Bo, who recently won a lifetime achievement for his contribution to jazz. This long player doesn't rely on collaborations, they simply fit the grand scheme.
âEargasmâ is one of those rare albums that sounds equally as good whether you're in a club, a car, a party or your lounge room. It's intricacy, deep textures and intensity packaged with a backbone of funk boasts a completely unique yet very accessible sound. Incorporating samples from the vaults of Kool And The Gang and Terence Trent D'Arby as well as writing songs with Lou Robinson and Gary Numan they have successfully taken the sonic revolution a step further.
2004 was a massive year for the Plumps - between DJing all over the world, they managed to get in some studio time as well as organise their quarterly EARGASM night at London's Fabric. They took out 2 awards at the 2004 Breakspoll Awards including Best Producers and Best Album (for âEargasmâ).
2005 has been just as prolific with the boys taking out yet more awards at Breakspoll 2005, this time for Best Producers, Best Single (âSoul Vibratesâ) and Best Remix (Freestylers - âPush Upâ). Following the groundbreaking success of 'A Plump Night Out' and 'Eargasm' the Plump DJs are back with 70 minutes of the highest quality blistering breaks. âSaturday Night Lotionâ features 11 original tracks plus 2 remixes with Andy and Lee calling upon some of the scene's biggest names such as The Freestylers, Soul of Man, The Drumattic Twins, Lee Coombs and Italian sensation Madox to bolster this already heavyweight package.
In additional, 2005 has witness The Plump DJs unite mind-blowing sets with an extra lashing of funk at the years biggest and most influential festivals, namely We Love Homelands (UK), Glastonbury (UK), Global Gathering (UK), V2005 (UK), Creamfields (UK), Judgement Sunday @ Eden (Ibiza) and Tribal Sessions (Ibiza) and more
Welcome the Plump DJs into your life - they're gonna be around for a while
