An Indonesian law student was this week facing up to 20 years in jail after he was accused of maliciously starting a fire at acclaimed Surabaya nightspot Redboxx in which ten people died.

The club’s resident DJ and an Australian and Japanese national were amongst the victims who were killed in what police said was a revenge attack launched by Christian Natalino after he became angry at staff refusing to play a reggae track he requested.

While one newspaper reported that Natalino set fire to a foam sofa with a lighter, chief detective Adj. Comr. Arbaridi Jumhur from Surabaya Police told the Jakarta Globe he lit a curtain as revellers watched a world cup soccer game.

“The suspect said his initial intention was only to trigger panic among Redboxx staffs,” Detective Jumhur told the Globe, “But the flame spread and it was beyond his expectation,” Arbaridi said. (Jakarta Globe: http://tinyurl.com/34jl7z4 )

Indonesian Terrorists Terrorise Manumission

Ibiza promoters Manumission have postponed a planned Minimission event in Bali after terrorists blew up two five star hotels in Jakarta two weeks ago, killing nine people.

“Manumission in Privilege was singled out as the highest risk terrorist target in Ibiza by the British Government due to the massive numbers of people attending and the nature of our shows,” Mike and Claire Manumission explained in a statement, “We feel that doing our show in Bali at this present moment could be like waving a red flag to a bull.”

The couple also cited Manchester United’s decision to cancel a 3 day trip following the bombings, explaining ‘we do not feel safe going to Bali to do an event on the beach. We feel we would be putting our team and ourselves and the public at risk.”

Event promoter Arief Sundjaja from Indonesian superclub organisation the Embassy Club was sympathetic.

“Manumission's cancellation is really a disappointment as we've worked hard to bring them here to Indonesia to Bali, the island of the Gods. And in a way we are contributing to Indonesian society by staging what would have been this major event. It's just too bad the terrorists didn't see it that way and decided to wreck it for the rest of us,” he said.

Manumission’s press release also quoted Foreign Office advice warning of ‘a general threat from terrorism in Indonesia’ though Arief downplayed the significance of the official travel alert.

“Those warnings appear as and when there're some news on something we feel is often quite trivial; there's a higher chance of you getting hit by traffic here than being bombed, to be honest,” said Arief.

“It’s now two weeks since the bombings happened and little has changed in business terms since then,” he noted.

“Hotels in Bali are full and people are still out eating at their favourite restaurants, clubbing and partying, hardly any events have been cancelled, apart from Manumission postponing,” he noted.

“I applaud the Indonesians who in solidarity, are going out to Bali in droves to party. And I must say, the Indonesian government is doing a better job this time round,” he concluded.
