*********
In the US state of Minnesota lies a small town called Owatonna with roughly 22,000 inhabitants. Within that city is a quiet road with a modest house. In that house there’s a messy basement with no windows. That’s where you’ll find 23-year-old Adam Young (Owl City) hard at work perfecting candy-coated electro-pop, like a hipster Willy Wonka.

From within the “cave” of his parents’ basement, as Adam likes to call it, he has begun to quickly win over a rapidly growing audience thirsty for something genuine, melodically infectious, and uplifting. The same adjectives could easily describe Owl City’s tunage.

Adam specialises in writing dreamy, escapist pop songs which just so happen to be spreading like wild fire. His ascent into popular culture though was as humble and unassuming as his beginnings: He made some songs, put them on Myspace and didn't tell anyone. Fifty million plays and two hundred thousand friends later, Owl City has become a worldwide phenomenon.

He released his first LP Maybe I'm Dreaming in 2008. It went to #16 on the Billboard Album Chart - a jaw dropping debut from an indie singer songwriter. His second album Ocean Eyes (recently released worldwise on Universal Records) rocketed to a #2 bestseller on iTunes (second only to Michael Jackson). Mixed by John Goodmanson (Death Cab For Cutie, Nada Surf, Hot Hot Heat) it was recorded in – you guessed it – Adam’s parents’ basement.

Adam’s brand of fizzy, escapist electro-cotton candy has earned him comparisons to fellow synthesizer-lovers the Postal Service; but the ambiance of Adam’s music – conjuring up hot-air balloon rides, underwater dives, and sun-bleached landscapes – represents the workings of his own imagination, fused with influences ranging from New Wave to disco and synthpop.

Owl City are currently on a sold out string of North American dates before visiting HK on part of their Asian tour. This is a rare opportunity for us here in HK to catch a true rising star just as he goes supernova!
