About THEORETICAL GIRL & “DIVIDED”
“A golden, swirling moment of beatific pop wonder.” – BBC
“...sparkling, perfectly constructed pop songs, brimming with catchy choruses and joyful hand clapping. But, within moments, that delicate facade can fall away sharply to reveal an aggressive indie stance pulsing with electro madness.” – Clash
“The Southend songwriter has managed to build her own distinct and powerfully pretty white picket fence of sound...” – NME
“Lily Allen eat your heart out.” – News of The World
Theoretical Girl is the alter-ego of British singer songwriter Amy Turnnridge who’s seductive, sweeping pop with the perfect sprinkling of melancholy has earned her rave reviews. She has become the rightful queen of the London indie scene and visits Hong Kong as part of her tour in support of debut album DIVIDED.
DIVIDED, with its pop-tinged tales of unrequited love, mistakes and regrets set to upbeat melodies and grooves, has been met with critical acclaim from music press worldwide. Her emotive live shows have left a trail of swooning hearts in her wake from Glastonbury Festival to sold out head-
line tours across Europe, the UK and Japan. She has also supported acts such as Maximo Park, Metric, Robyn, Calvin Harris and Kate Nash to name but a few.
She has recently recorded and released her stunning debut album through Memphis Industries, home of The Go Team, The Pipettes, Field Music and Tokyo Police Club.
Her recent singles show the scope of her work, with “Rivals” being both heartbreaking and danceable, “Red Mist” and ‘I Should Have Loved You More’ setting self-recrimination to sunshine-pop.
Amy takes inspiration from such diverse sources as 60s girl groups, Tom Waits, Billy Joel, Purcell and the classic twee-pop of Sarah Records, to make a timeless mixture of classic indie for both the bedroom and the dancefloor.
An true independent DIY spirit, Amy taught herself to play as many instruments as she could. She also ran her own club night “Frolic” for four years, in her home town of Southport “I put it on so I had somewhere to go to dance to decent music,” she says.
About SONGS FOR CHILDREN
Fittingly, it was the very same attitude that saw the club night Songs For Children begin in March this year by British DJs Jane Blondel and Mike Mystery. Looking for a place to go and dance to real indie music and being unable to find one, set it up themselves. Since then they have enjoyed
hugely successful nights and collaborations with PAE and IndieTracks Festival UK.
This is the first live show put on by Songs For Children, who have taken their DIY ethic to the next level and have begun booking live bands as an antidote to the boredom of only stadium acts playing Hong Kong. The venue, Rockschool, has been chosen for its dance-friendly, no rules DIY attitude.
