Scotland’s Mungo's Hi Fi came into being in 2000, with a desire to hear decent music in their own city of Glasgow and the serendipitous occasion of finding some speakers in a skip. Since then Mungo's Hi Fi have become one of the most progressive forces in international reggae and dubstep, unleashing a myriad of highly sought-after releases on their Scotch Bonnet & Scrub a Dub labels, while playing over 1000 sell-out gigs throughout the UK and Europe in the last 8 years alone - fast becoming the most in-demand sound system in Europe.
Drawing from a rich heritage of Jamaican soundsystem culture, Mungo's produce a bass-heavy sound with a distinctively quirky fresh twist that has garnered them a cult following across the world and earned them high praise from the likes of BBC DJ Mary-Anne Hobbes, UK soundsystem legend Jah Shaka, the late great John Peel and Mr Scruff - who went on to include their killer track Ing on his Solid Steel mix released on Ninja Tunes.
The lads have collaborated with some of the biggest names in both old-school and new-school reggae, including: Sugar Minott, Sister Nancy, Ranking Joe, Kenny Knots, Earl 16, Top Cat, Tippa Irie, Brother Culture and Warrior Queen, as well as Scotland’s own indomitable Soom T.
Many of the above featured on their phenomenally successful 2008 debut LP "Sound System Champions" – leading one of the biggest sellers of reggae music worldwide, Ernie B - to list the double-LP as one of his ‘Essential Picks’, whilst stating that it is “Perhaps the best full length steppers LP to come out in the last few years! Must have.”
Their sets span a broad selection of musical stylings from ska and rocksteady, through roots and steppers, to rub a dub, digital roots, dancehall and dubstep. Expect Mungo’s at their electric live shows to unleash an arsenal of unreleased Scotch Bonnet gems as well as one-off dubplates from the likes of Movado, Buju Banton and Bounty Killer – all on their own riddims - as well as selections from their latest wicked riddim Bad From.
The last few months alone have seen the busy boys play in Mexico, Brazil, Israel, France, Germany, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Denmark, Finland, Croatia, Holland, Poland, Austria, New Zealand and Australia, as well as mashing it up with the their custom built sound system at festivals in the UK - so clearly their sounds are catching an outernational vibe. Future plans are to tour more widely with the sound system to give people a 3D bass experience.
On their China Tour we are lucky enough to have one of the two founding members of the crew, Tom, who is also the creative genius behind their riddims: working on a computer for synths and programming, but then mixing it all live on an analogue desk with spring reverb, analogue delay, and external effects - in a classic King Tubby’s/Scientist stylee.
Forward thinking every time!
Big up to Mungo’s Hi Fi for their Top 10 selection for March 2010:
- Earl 16 – International Roots (Scotch Bonnet)
- Boabinga ft. Killa Benz – Wine Up (Steakhouse Records)
- Soom T – Did you Really Know (Scotch Bonnet)
- Solo Banton – Talk to Me (Jahtari)
- Von D & Riskotheque (Disfigured Dubs)
- Chuck Turner – Run Around Girl (Jammys)
- Carlton and the Shoes – Forever and Always (Quality)
- Private Tabby – No Worry Yourself (Godfather)
- Barry Brown – Give Love (Studio 1)
- Mala – Eyez (dub)
