It’s been a while since I wrote an article, basically because I have so many things to do in my mission to make Hong Kong’s nightlife scene better, which of course is always challenged.
I wanted to get some feedback from you that visit the site about the DJ Top 100 by DJ Mag. Internationally this is the most observed charts in the world from what I can see and if you are in it can have a big influence on bookings, publicity and generally overall good for a DJ career. Some DJs really push for a position in the charts, where others don’t bother and prefer to just do what they do and if they are in it then there they are. Over the years being in the charts has been used to promote DJs a lot in Asia especially Hong Kong and China and I have had many enquiries from venues in China where they have specifically request for DJs in the top 100 only. For Hong Kong, some of the Top 100 have lived in Hong Kong, but correct me if I am wrong we have never had a born and raised DJ from Hong Kong that have been in the Top 100 to date. Would this be a good thing for Hong Kong? Or will it not really have much of an impact on the night life scene of Hong Kong. What do you think?Of course there have been issues with the voting in the past where people have been removed due to attempts in rigging the results, where the DJs ended up being removed and saying that they knew nothing about it. Let us know what you think of the charts as I feel that everyone has quite a strong opinion about it. I see no harm in the charts, I can see an idea of who people are voting for generally around the world, I can find out about new names and in some places where the music and the skill of the DJ may not be that well known it can help in them having a chance to play somewhere where a promoter may not necessarily book them if they are not in the charts. every year i detest receiving emails from the agents of DJs or the DJs themselves pleading "vote for me, vote for me". more often than not, a DJ's inclusion in the top 100 is the result of spamming and intense marketing, not actual skills behind the decks or whatever.
you wouldn't believe the amount of pre-competition spamming and relentless promotion done by one "Hong Kong" DJ who has made the list for the past three years. he's a decent DJ, but should he be higher on the list than deep dish, justice and sander kleinenberg? and he's above former DMC champion dj hype, for f*ck's sake.
that says it all: the list is a load of crap.
